Blue didn't have it last night

My 10 month old is really crazy at a caged coon. Tries to eat him through the wire. He constantly hunts nose on the ground or in the air. Can track and tree a dead drag 600 yards. Took him last night. Fought at the cage. We turn coon loose later in a field and it went strait to a Cyprus tree. 4 broke dogs treed and mine just went to the cage, smelled it didn't bother to hunt.when coon hit the ground other dogs were all over it and he just casually went to sniff it and didn't show any more interest until we got the other dogs away.Hes got Ellis' blue Jim , SR diamond Jim , JB's chief. He's got it all but disappointing me. Is it because too many other dogs 'distraction'? On his own he shows me more of what I want from him. Just not with other dogs around. 4-6 dogs

sounds like it to me u should just hunt him by him self. if he will run a drag that far and tree it he will be ready to hunt on his own. some dogs do not care what other are doing and just do there own thing. sounds like if u hunt him right he could get u in the winner circle.

4 dogs on one tree is too much chaos for a pup to be in on.If he can tree them by himself and do it right that's how Id hunt him.I have a young dog that looks good by itself but when I hunt it with my good female looks like a puppy. Its aggravating for sure.

if it was me i probably wouldnt have let him see the caged coon and cut the coon loose then put the cage away and then cut the dog loose and let him trail it and tree it. thats what we do with our young dogs. and cutting lose 4 older dogs on a cage coon to me is not very smart.

All 4 dogs weren't on the cage just my dog and one other young dog . Like I said when the coon was let loose Only the older dogs then trailed it and treed. Mine didn't bother to do anything but smell the cage. I'm thinking all the ruckus at the tree was a distraction cuz normally he will hunt or track anything alone. Just didn't with the group.i know he's young but he's always tracking.hes got one good nose and can track and tree any drag or dead coon drag. Just tried him out that night cuz every time I take him in the woods I've yet to get him on a live one

A couple questions , how old are you and you buddies ? Is this you first attempt at training a hound ? Seems like your young and needing some good advice ,not a bashing from us .

I'd day Chuck is on the right track.

My 2 cents,

1) DO NOT show him any more cage coon

2) Next time you get a coon, just take the young dog with you, turn the coon loose & put the cage back in the truck. Give it 5 minutes, then get the young dog out & turn him loose. Just be patient & watch, give him some time to work.

If it is in there, it will come out.

If he does get to treeing a couple of those turn loose coon on his own, I would wean him off those & start taking him to the woods at night.

I have see quite a few very nice coon treeing dogs that were not the least bit interested in a cage coon, so do not get discouraged in your young hound based on his actions around a turn loose cage coon.

Best of luck to you with your young hound!

I'm 49 yrs old. This is my first bluetick. All I ever owned before were pits. I'm trying to learn this as I've never coon hunted I take him out at night and he will solidly hunt for 2 hours or more just haven't got him on a live one in the woods. He'll track and tree drags every time.even up to 600 yards. Just thought I'd take him out with some broke dogs. Then he acted like he could care less. Yes this is my first at training or trying. Thanks for y'all's input
And I hope no one starts bashing me. I came to this forum looking for advise ,I have no one around where I live that coon hunts but a few I've met. It's not a big thing around here (eastern va ) everybody round here just run deer

Alright now we're getting somewhere . Now if you take vic Stoll's advice ,you will be started down the right track on getting your pup lined out . There are several guys on here that have a lot of good advice ,just start reading some of these posts and you will see many opinions . Some will right and some will be wrong (imo) , but best of luck with your pup .

X2 I have turned loose coons and not put the cage up and the dogs go straight to the cage and go crazy even though it don't have crap in it. Always cut coon put cage up then give it a few minutes then cast dogs. I always said it was to much hot sent in one place and it makes it especially hard on a pup to figure it out with a cage that's been drug and then still laying there full of hot sent. If you messed with the pup at all with a caged coon it is conditioned to know it is in the cage and not been let go.

I have even turned one loose in a creek bed before where there is a hole of water big enough to submerge the trap that way its like it disappears and the trail just begins. Have also gone to the farm in one truck to turn the coon loose, take cage back home, then load dogs in another truck and go turn them loose on it. Anything you can do to make it as natural for them as possible will help. Also don't put your pup directly on it, steer him in the right direction but let the pup think he found it.
