In this case because the dog was treed after the tree closed he was automatically split treed. When cast arrived he wasn't split Never tree a dog on a closed tree unless you know for sure it is split and will stay. If dog had not been treed what paul told you would be the case
Judge did the right thing.

If dog is treed after five is up then it better be split treed because that is how it goes on the card. A&B's tree is closed so when dog D is treed it is accepted as a split tree. So it was scored correctly that dog D gets minus both ways (rule 4i).

Yep, the judge got this one exactly right. Read rule 4(l).

few years ago at Walker days 4 dog cast, all dogs struck , 3 dogs called treed, my female did not tree with them, 5 is up and we start to tree my dog trees, sounds like with the other dogs, judge says are you going to tree your dog i told him no, we get there and my dog is treed 30 ft from theres i told him to tree her there , they took min. for a slick and i got O for a den.
do not ever tree after the 5 unless you know they are split

Pat,
Again, different rules apply to different situations.
In this scenario (which the judge totally got right) the dog is not minused on his tree because there is a coon seen, he is minused because he was not split treed!
A few years ago the Rules Change Committee passed this rule. Used to be, if a dog was declared treed after the 5, and it was not obviously split, the judge could not accept the call. Now a dog that is treed after the 5 is up is automatically called split, even if it is not obvious. If you get to the tree and he is, in fact, on the closed tree, his tree points are automatically minused because he was declared split and is not in fact split.
Now, since the dog's tree points have been ruled on, you have to deal with his strike points. He is obviously a dog treeing but not declared treed when the Judge arrives so he could call under 4(k) (remember new rule numbers as well) if there is off game or a slick tree, or 4(j) if there is a coon seen.
