Scoring ?

Ok. while at a hunt last night this came up. Guy said that one dog was across a river treed in a hole in the bank. Big river i understood now! Two dogs didnt cross it. was barking. He said the two dogs on other side barking would get circle pts. Because one dog showed end of the track. Across the river now. Would they not be minused! Barking at the water? Never was at the hole

If its that big a river. Why handle the 2 dogs anyhow. Let em bark. Not a thing that can be done about it.

Rule 5 (a)....by actions either tree barking or otherwise, show to the satisfaction of the judge, coon to be there. One dog must show end of trail.
That is pretty self explanatory.

That wouldnt satisfy me. Id kick mine in the river!! Lol Some common sense has got to be used in these hunts. Ive seen more craziness lately than ever.

in that case I would minus the two treeing the river both ways and circle the others strike and tree

If it was a Ntch cast I would scratch the two barking at the water for molesting off game (fish) and circle the one that braved the fish infested waters.

I guess that everyone is different. I would pet mine for staying on my side of the river so that I didn't have to swim over there and get him.
What is the difference between treeing on the side of the river or swimming over to the other side just to stick their head in a hole? Would you minus a dog that sat back off of a tree on his rear and treed?

how in the world would your dogs know that coon went in a hole if they didn't cross to find out. No wonder some of the dogs in a hunt are like they are

Im gonna teach mine to start staying at the bottom of these big hills. Something trees on top. Just sit right down and start treeing. I'll take whatever points the other dogs get then.

The entire rule reads......
When dog strikes and trees on a tree or a hole
in the ground where there could be a coon,
yet Judge does not see coon and no off game
is seen. NOTE: In case of running coon in a
hole or place of refuge other than a tree, handler
may call dog treed. However, if not called
treed, cast may proceed to general area, and
track can be considered finished if dogs, by
actions either tree barking or otherwise, show
to the satisfaction of the Judge, coon to be
there. One dog must show end of trail. For
dogs declared treed in a hole or tile, see Rule
3(b) or 4(g), if applicable.

Barking treed and barking because they're scared of getting into water are 2 different things in my mind especially since 1 dog has crossed and is actually treed.

How do you know that they are scared? Maybe they just have more sense than that dumbass dog that swam the river. They know that according to UKC, only one of them had to swim the river.
I remember a hunt many years ago when I was much younger and had a lot less sense. Three dogs treed across a small but deep creek and the other 2 handlers talked me into swimming/wading over to get them. They both told me that they couldn't swim. I found out later that was a big lie when everyone back at the club laughed at me.
And Ga Dawg, you might be on to something there.
