-- Alpha question!!! (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928371576)

Alpha question!!!

the way i read this to me it sounds like you can use an alpha where the training code is not in it, therefore you can not shock them or tone. i have an alpha collar that i took the prongs out of and dont even have the train code in for that i run on my old dog and wanna know if im a loud to use it.

Question is am i reading it wrong?

"Any handheld device capable of controlling (stimulating or toning) a dog may not be carried or
used during the hunt unless the controlling features are disabled. Disabled is defined as; the
feature is not capable of functioning when in the “on” position and the handler could not enable
the feature at any time during the hunt."

Take battery out and use during timeouts only

Posted by JiM on 04-14-2014 01:30 AM:

From what I have observed so far this year, no one, not judges, handlers, MOH's or clubs are treating the Alpha any differently than the Astro. It appears to be similar to the old rule about scoring dogs in order, the rule is there, plainly stated and completely ignored by almost everyone.

If you do this your time out would be as soon as the dogs were released or sooner. HUNT STARTS YOU HAVE AN ALPHA ON YOUR PERSON.YOU ARE SCRATCHED. ALPHA MUST BE IN VEHICLE AND TURNED OFF. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF THE BATTERIES ARE OUT, THE PRONGS ARE REMOVED,AND ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO DO TO IT, IF YOU ARE CARRYING IT DURING HUNT TIME YOU ARE SCRATCHED.

Whatever happened to common sense and integrity. I sure in the h#$l don't need a garmin in the hunt and can't stand to watch guys looking at them the whole time the hunt is going on but to me disabled is disabled no battery no power. What part of disable do I not understand??

Posted by patches9452 on 04-14-2014 01:31 PM:

What part of incapable do you not understand. Just because it want work it's still capable when you put the battery or prongs back in

Posted by jason keck on 04-14-2014 08:18 PM:

But it is OK to call time out and go back to truck and track my dog makes sense don't it

Posted by jason keck on 04-14-2014 08:30 PM:

We use the terms UKC gives which is disabled. When you disable the functions you are not capable of using controlling features. I might b wrong with where I'm going with this but I am allowed to track a dog during time out periods with an alpha if not then I've been misinformed and read rules wrong

Posted by john Duemmer on 04-14-2014 08:36 PM:

Yes you can use your Alpha during a timeout, during a timeout you cannot effect the scoreing of another handlers dog. Seems pretty simple to understand.

Yeah I just reread it. Not trying to sound argumentive about this but I hope you see where I'm coming from on this. I don't care to have alpha on during hunt. But if a timeout is called and for some reason I can't call my dog in I could simply pop battery back in and find dog. Instead of going back to truck. With that being said would you not agree no battery would disable the whole track in and training feature. I realize what UKC says.

Posted by Lance W on 04-14-2014 09:02 PM:

Here's my deal with this rule and I don't even own an alpha! But Ukc rules are for safety of the dogs and if I have my 220 and jack has his 320 and joe has his alpha and has to leave it in the truck and were hunting and the dogs are getting close to a highway or a dangerous place me and jack can look and see where our dogs are but what about joes dog? How does he know where his dog is? Maybe it's in danger maybe it's not how does he know? He could go back and look if close enough to the truck but by then it may be too late. If I owned an alpha if prob quit Ukc hunts like I know a lot of people are. JMO.

no you cannot have the alpha on your person during hunt time even with the battery out. You can leave it n the truck on the on position. It cannot at this point take it on the cast even disabled

Any handheld device capable of controlling a dog (stimulating or toning) unless controlling feature can be an is disabled while unit is in the on position must be left in the vehicle an May not be used. If you take out the prongs it will still tone in the on position I think the on position part is what gets you

Posted by jason keck on 04-15-2014 02:17 AM:

I understand what the rules say men but my only point is this when we first started carrying garmins in hunts they were to b left in the off position which is basically what you r doing with the alphas battery pulled out. I'm not saying that if I pull my battery out that I can carry it. This is UKC ruling. What I am saying if a unit is disfunctional how the hell am I going to use it? If i give the judge the battery all I have is a piece of rubber and plastic. That piece of rubber and plastic does not constitute scratching

yes but if the training code is not in it then you cant tone either. its like having a 220 or 320!!

but it's still capable of it. All you have to do is add the training code

Posted by pabeagler on 04-15-2014 01:04 PM:

Myself I think if you turn off the training feature on the alpha you are disabling the ability to shock or tone a dog. If you are worried about someone using a gamin alpha to win a hunt then you need more dog power. But I think if the rule says if you can use any device that has training ability disabled. Then removing the training code in the alpha should be sufficient. If anyone caught using the training feature during a hunt should be barred for a certain amount of time. Jmo

You guys sure like to beat a dead horse.....

UKC made a ruling that Alpha's are not allowed to be carried or used during the hunt EXCEPT during time outs and they also stated and posted what their interpretation of DISABLED is. Batteries out and prongs removed does not constitute DISABLED.

x2 If you want to carry your Garmin in the hunts go back to the 320 No use to beat a dead horse anymore!

Until next week when it gets brought up again. These posts are about as dumb as a dog food thread every other day.

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.
Tell us where these hunts were so UKC can revoke their ability to have sanctioned events.
I can't believe you would get on here and openly admit to cheating. If you are not going to follow the plain and simple rule about Alphas, I am sure there are many other rules you do not follow too!

The judge told me I could keep it with me so I did but it was off so why you crying and nobody won the cast that night so you have anything else to cry bout!!!!
And one cast we all had alphas we all turned them on at one point because of the hounds near a major highway pretty dumb that UKC dont let us carry them but that's OK I prefer PKC anyway

I am not crying! I do not even hunt in these things but to get on an open forum and admit cheating, that is crazy.
Evreyone on that cast should be barred as well as the MOH if he knew about it!

Why did you delete your original post? Where was this hunt at?
