Is anyone honest anymore?
Well guys, mine and dads old dog died a few weeks ago. Some of you all may have seen the post I put up, But any who. I have been looking for a 4 or 5 year old male settled in coon hound to replace him. I have looked on here and on several coon hunting groups on facebook in my area. Well, I don't like to bad mouth anyone, But from what I have seen its no wonder coon hunters have a bad name to many. With people wanting war prices for trash and cull dogs. I have contacted a few on dogs I was interested in. Its all the same, He's the best dog in the world. Well, if he's that good why are you getting rid of him and why no trial? Almost got took on a 4 year old grnitech dog I asked the guy for a trial, Was told only way I will is with cash in hand paid in full. I was going to do it and another guy contacted me and wrote. Man, I had this dog. I raised him from a pup and made him a grnitech and sold him to a guy which sold him to the guy you are communicating with. Here is the full story on the dog. I put him in a hunt and the dogs treed. He jumped on another dog at the tree and almost killed it. So I sold him. Now I know why he wanted cash upfront paid in full and I would have been screwed. Is no one honest anymore? No wonder hunters have a bad name. Thanks for letting me vent.
Seems you have two options. Pay war price for a good dog and go try it with them along or get a pup and train yourself and see why people ask a bunch for one when it turns out. Seems that everyone wants to try on their own turf and there ain't no way I'm letting a top dog out to someone I don't know even with money in hand. Just to much stuff can happen
geez
keep your head up theres good guys out there that sell dogs and i would never pay big money for a dog without a trial and i would always want to go with the seller most of them will take u multiple times and if someone doesnt want to show him in the woods then theres usually somthing to hide and never buy a dog that has two prices!
Let me recommend another option. Think outside the box. Go hunting with lots of people and lots of dogs all around in your area. Do not look for a dog "for sale". Do not look in the classifieds. Just go hunting with lots of folks. When you see what you want , and you can easily tell its what you like, talk to the owner and make an offer or ask him what he would take . Just my opinion.
Re: Is anyone honest anymore?
quote:I can't belive the guy who owned the dog didnt have him put down guess I am just different if he was my dog he never would have been sold but thats just me I hope they didnt breed the dog good luck in your search finding a new hound and as the Amish would say watch them english people

On the flip side I hate buyers that a trial....
Do you get to drive a car around for a week or 2 while you decide if you like it???? Live in a house a week or 2?? Wanna trial on a rifle before you buy it?
It just don't make sense...I considered selling my dog and had a guy that wanted to buy it...he wanted a trial for a couple weeks...sorry guy..that ain't happening..
How will you treat it? How will you feed it? Where will you keep it? What happens if he gets hit on the road? Bit by a snake? Lost? Stolen? A trial IMO just doesn't make sense..
Put on your boots and light and come hunting..I will meet you a reasonable distance...I will go a couple nights if you ain't kickin tires..that's fair in my book...why do you need MY dog for a week or 2? I don't have a magic button to make him tree coon when he is hunting with me..what you see is what you will get....
Also gotta realize I can 100000% promise my dog won't hunt well on a trial for a period of time...he is MY dog..he loves ME...I feed him..I am his buddy..I've seen it with numerous dogs through my life...I seen one that hunted OK a night or 2 when I went with my friend and that dog..then he just quit doing much of anything...took a few hunts and he did a nice job from then on out...till i took him alone..then he wouldn't do much for a few nights till he got used to me...then we were a heck of a team...
I agree...there's a chunk of dishonest folks out there...sad a mans word and handshakes are nearly worthless anymore...
But..gotta look at the trial issue from MY point of view as well...I'd imagine I ain't the only guy that feels that way...
I don't wanna sell my dog..ever..but if I did my honest reason is lack of time and place...right now he lives at my friends farm...I gotta head out now and feed him..I might be starting a new job and who knows if I can take him with me...all I know is I sure hope so and will try harder than anything to make sure he can come..it'd be hard to sell him..

I bought a 5 yr old Nite Ch Walker Male off a guy the other day and the dog was better than described to me on the phone. The guy was honest as honest can be. I know they are hard to find but this guy was very honest and I didn't pay a war price either.
I dont need to hunt one on trail. A couple nights with the owner and Im good. If I sale one. Its not going out on trail either. I'll take you 7 nights anyway you wanna see it go but it want leave my place without being paid for in full.

I wont buy one without a trial, unless its a dog i have hunted with a bunch. No one really knows what a dog is after 1 or 2 nights.
If im gonna trust the seller holdin my cash, hes gonna trust me holdin his dog. In a week he can start spendin it.

Ive never lied about a dog in order to sale it and wont start today. If i got a dog for sale everybody is welcome to come and go with it as many nights as they want. Its gonna do exactly what i said it would cause im gonna describe it off its bad nights. All dogs have them. As far as letting someone take him on a trial it aint happening. I have nothin to hide but ive seen good dogs get ruined in a week. I tell you right now though if i got what i call a good dog it would be high. You think about the price you pay for a pup and then you pay his paper work up both ways and then you put all your time in training him. Pups are a headache and i know cause thats what i hunt. I got a 10 month old i started when he was 6 months old and ive turned down $3500 for him. Crazy? Maybe but ive put alot into him and i cant find one like him. Good ones aint for sale. If they are you have to dig deep to get them. Get you a good pup and start over. Make it how you want it.

Then pay the guy for the dog if I liked what it did. Then him give me a guarantee of a week to get my money back on said hound. Because we all know a dog may hunt great one night and not do crap the next. I didn't think that was to much to ask and have done it before myself on hounds I have sold. If the dog gets gone or killed or whatever while in my possession he has his money and its a done deal.If the dog is what it is supposed to be and the man is honest. The dog wouldn't be brought back anyway. When I ask to show a dog or for a trial Its so I don't get screwed and If a guy don't want to show the hound then you can guarantee something is fishy. I been hunting for 22 years this aint my first rodeo.....

Id take you out with him a month straight every night if you wanted to but once he leaves in your truck hes yours. Jmo though and some would agree and some wouldnt.

See, I could have lived with that. But this was a put cash in my hand before we take the dog out and if you like him he's yours. I'm just not comfortable handing over that kind of cash to someone I don't know on his turf. Before I have even had a chance to see what a dog will do. He has the cash after that and they are way to many crazies and drug heads in this world. If he would have done what you just stated and let me go hunting with him a few nights. I would have bought the dog if it was what he said it was after hunting with it a few nights. I see both sides man but this was a bad deal from the get go. There is no way I'm going to put cash in your hand and then go somewhere that I have no clue where we are at in the woods with someone I don't know and them have my cash....

Got ya now....I wouldn't ask for, take or touch your money till you were ready to load him in your box...
Possibly trying to curb tire kicking/someone interested but only going to offer 1/4 of the price etc...? Who knows...a little odd to request cash in hand to hunt with him and the dog...
Heck..if someone wanted see some trackman dogs just for fun? Put your boots and light on and let's go..don't got a light? I got a spare..

I heard that man. I guess that's why I liked the old dog so much. He was a bawl on track death bawl locate circle then chop on tree and would stay put all night if needed. He didn't have much of a mouth either. But if he opened on track it went up somewhere either hole or tree. He knew how to finish a track and wouldn't boohoo all night. We had him almost 2 years and 1 time I went to him and it was slick or I couldn't find it anyway. If they treed and it was a possum he would meet you at the truck when you pulled up or if he seen lights. We always hunted him with dads other dog which is good on a hot track but would hang with the old dog on a cold track. When the young dog opened we knew it wouldn't be long and the young dog has got a train horn for a mouth. Man hes loud. So if you couldn't hear the old dog on tree. You couldn't miss the young dog. I got a 9 month old female that has a horn too but she isn't treeing or running track yet. But will go with the other dogs. I figure it won't be long before she Is opening up. The other night she got out there about 900 yards while the others were running track. She followed every step they made but never opened up. They holed up and came back.
