how fair are coon hunts

Just want to hear some opinions on this.I have been a spectator and entered in a lot of hunts over the last several years after seeing grown men act worse then kids arguing over a toy I just sticking with pleasure hunting.isn't hunting supposed to be fun.
If all the b.s that everyone knows is going on in hunts does nitech mean anything? ?
after trying several nitech.after my old dog died.it was obvious to me that handlers make titles.
Just what I have seen.

Im new to compiton hunting but ive been going on a few. What ive seen so far is its all in the judge you get. A good judge seems to set the tone for how your hunt is going to go.

I agree with that a non hunting judge on a cast and a good guide is a big part of having a good hunt

Posted by mauser06 on 03-18-2014 05:36 AM:

Hoss is IMO right on....a good judge sets the ton for the cast....good clubs know who their good judges are and make sure they are judges...

Bad clubs...take the Vaseline...you'll draw out a couple buddies or cousins or brothers and itll get down right stupid..

What I've done is remember what clubs aren't good...and don't go back...maybe once every few years to see if anything changed...one club for example..it was bad...then they got a new president and MOH and its been AWESOME...

I've been going for about 10 years...I don't go every weekend...but I go and if there is a hunt within an hour-hour and a half I've been to the club...out of ALL the clubs I regularly goto I've NEVER had a cast win there...ever...

Coincidently every time I am there the cast is a joke...so I won't be back anytime soon...last year was enough...the "winner" of the cast called me every few months wanting to buy my dog...

There is a fine line between judges that are too weak and judges that think they are king of the forest...a good judge knows the rules and HOW to properly apply them....hunts BY those rules...and doesn't let the slick handlers pull their shenanigans...

At the same time you gotta know the rules and how to apply them and make sure they are applied...and check the score card...this weekend the judge and another guy kept getting on a guy for calling the wrong dog...I thought that he was being minused as he should have been...at the end of the night he won..only because of a poor judge...

Can't say how fair the hunts are.....some are very fair....some aren't fair at all...

With all the slick handlers out there and buddy judges and wrong calls.Does nitech mean anything? ?????? I would like to hear options on why or why not

Posted by ole hoss on 03-18-2014 05:59 AM:

I dont really get in to nitetechs and grandnites. Some earned those titles and some didnt. Just cause a dog is grand dont mean alot to me. I go by what i see them do. If they do it in style chances are they earned it. If they go out and boo-hoo around and slick tree 3-4 times then he was probably handed his title. Im not from missouri but i still like to be showed.

The old saying, I never saw a set of papers tree a coon.when the tail gate drops the b.s stops.

Posted by ole hoss on 03-18-2014 06:16 AM:

Thats right and when it drops that title dont mean a hill of beans. When hes setting in their deep and alone with the meat then we can talk.

Papers don't tree coon but from what I've seen, when the tailgate drops, the bs usually starts lol we have a guy around here that EVERY CAST people are complaining about cheating, lack of rule knowledge and unfairness... and the club keeps using him as a judge. I don't think he lost a cast last year at that club, but that doesn't mean squat, and I get criticised for telling people that ask about his dogs, that instead of taking his word, they should go hunting with them. People act like suggesting to do their own research is like saying that the dogs can't do it, which isn't true (I don't know if his dogs can do it or not) but rather than questioning, go look for yourself

i feel the hunts that i have been to in and around my area have been respectable and fun. now i dont think the best dog always wins but most of the time it does. judges, guides, handlers and of coarse luck also play a role.
i also think sometimes when people hunt with a nt ch or gr nt ch they dont feel that dog should have a off nite but they do just like any other dog.also just because the dog made nt ch or gr nt ch it doesn't mean that dog would suit everyone.

Posted by dogsandtrucks on 03-18-2014 02:54 PM:

An off night is not what I'm talking about I give all dogs that I might buy a one week 7 nights of hunting before I make my mind up.
what do you think is a good trial period for a dog?

Posted by JustinH23 on 03-18-2014 03:44 PM:

Make sure you know the rules, and tell the MOH that you would be willing to judge your cast when you turn in your entry. I know and see several guys who don't want to hold the card but then complain about every last decision because they felt it was "wrong" in their eyes.

Fair, what exactly is fair??? Nothing in life is fair, and I mean nothing! Our society needs to trash this whole notion of fair, but that is another post.

Is a handler that prepares better fair? Is a handler that knows the rules better fair? Competition hunting has rules. Are those rules fair? Not necessarily. Rules simply offer a level of consistency. Notice I don't say they create a level of consistency. This is why a good judge makes all the difference in a cast. Competition hunters live and die by the rules. Good or bad. That is the best we can offer. Those who accept those facts usually enjoy hunts. Those who can't ... well they usually avoid the hunts.

Finally, the idea that non-hunting judges are the answer to fairness in the competition hunts is far from reality.

Learn the rules! Learn to apply the rules! Learn to prepare you and your dog! Take responsibility and learn to judge a cast. Then and only then will you began to enjoy the hunts.

What fun would fair be?

I don't believe in "trial periods". If I'm selling a hound, you are more than welcome to come and hunt with me as many times as you want. But as far as sending dogs out on a "trial", no thanks. Way too many things that can go wrong doing that.

I've seen good honest coondogs sent out on a "trial period", and when they came back, you wouldn't know it was the same dog.

Same way if I'm buying a dog, I don't expect a good handler to send his dog to me on a trial. I would expect that I could come and hunt with the dog a few times to see what he's made of.

I have a blast at the hunts regardless of the cheating. At my local club here in NC, I can remember maybe 1-2 questions and/or arguments coming back to the MOH in the past 10 years. But I have hunted many other clubs where cheating seems to be the norm.

I go to a hunt expecting the worse.....and even on the nights I got cheated, I still had a blast.

What other sport and/or event is there in the world, where you can go spend $15-$25 and have a personal guide that takes you hunting for 2hrs in new terrain? And while doing it, you get to meet new people (some of which become dear friends and others who you wouldnt care to see again), and see coondogs work.

UKC hunting and Coon Hunting in general, is THE BEST SPORT IN THE WORLD. In my opinion because of the reasons listed above.

Getting cheated never hurt anyone. It builds character

If it takes you seven nights to figure out whether or not a dog can tree a coon, maybe you need a different hobby. Tom

The key to Nite hunts is know the rules and dont be scared to question a call. The judge is only a score keeper I keep my own paper to keep up with the score and I watch the judge every time he writes down a score. I have had judges make honest mistakes and some I wondered about. Some people say they got screwed and it was because they let it happen. I was on a hunt once I didn't know any of the cast members. We had a non hunting judge and guide the guide took us out and we went to a farm that was right on the side of a four lane highway. I said we are cutting them loose here. He said yes I told him he was crazy. It was a four dog cast. Two guys withdrew right there. After they withdrew I said ok if you crazy enough to cut yours loose here i am to. He said let's go someplace else and I won the hunt that night.
I dont argue I have what I want to say once I dont keep going back and forth on something.

I'm picky most dogs can tree a coon I want something special like the one I'm hunting now.I will hunt them in different spots with and without othere dogs.short hunts and all nighters.when I pay good money for a dog I know that dog inside and out.some dogs don't make the full trial.if I see something bad enough they will go sooner.

IF YOU LIKE TO BUY DOGS OFF THE CHAIN THAT IS YOUR BUSINESS I HAVE COON HUNTED MY HOLE LIFE .THAT IS JUST SOMETHING I WOULD NEVER DO

Those titles are just like dogs. Theirs a few good ones and a few not worth shooting. If your looking to buy one then id suggest droping the ole tail gate. Other wise it dont really matter if their titled or not. Unless your one of those all grand pedigree kind of fellors. To me that dont mean nothin. But thats just me. Everybody likes differnt things. When i get my dogs papers i look at his daddy and his momma. Make sure hes paid up and then put them away and dont ever pull them back out. So to me its about the dog.

How fair are coon hunts ?

If you know the rules inside & out , are respectful to your other cast members & practice good sportsmanship ... you will rearly leave a hunt feeling like you got cheated . And know your dog.

Ding Ding! I HATE people that complain they got cheated in every cast but then while they are signing up always say that they dont want to judge.
