Baytral for dogs???

I have a dog with a real bad ear issue. Vet said it was both yeast and an infection. Gave me two types of drops. Neither of which seemed to help. Was told to try using Baytral. Has anyone used this for dogs? If so how much, how often, and how long. thanks

Use APPLE cider vinegar and some mineral oil mix 90/10 put drops in each ear for 3 days repeat in a couple weeks if necessary..

my wifes shitzu has alot of ear trouble i keep a bottle of ear flush and and clean 1 time a week and also keep a tube of malotic med on hand if i see her digging at her ears i treat them if it gets to bad they dig thier ear then lick thier feet next thing ya know the infection gets in thier system starts comeing outa thier skin and you get a stinky dog hope ya the best geting it under control

Yes our dogs have been prescribed Baytril several times it is a good antibiotic . Dosage is dependent on weight of dog & condition being treated . I had one w/ a serious bacterial infection back in the fall that was on Baytril shots for 3 days then pills to complete out 2 wks (dog is perfectly healthy today) Many with cattle are familiar with Baytril for antibiotic purposes .

Cory.....i assume the vet cultlred the ear if he is telling you its yeast + an (infection )????
If he didnt culture, you should ask him to.....this is the same ole same ole I went thru w/Rocky..... vet piddly fart'd around until I spent 125$ and then I went to a second opinion and they cultured right away.....culture and sensitivity cost was about $65 but then not only do ya know what hes got, but what to use to beat it.
Rocky had a psuedomonus stuff that was very rare and all the baytrill, exceed, etc ya wanted was only kickin it back but not finishing the deed......
Ended up, got a small tube of stuff was expensive but very effective and not a problem since......

I wouldn't use baytril for this. Baytril is a very strong antibiotic and should be used for more serious issues. Putting your dog through cycles of strong antibiotics for something that can be handled by a lesser antibiotic may cause your dog to build up a resistance to it and when you do need the stronger antibiotic, it may not be as effective as desired.

Something that works for real right here. Make sure it is apple cider vinegar and nor just the regular vinegar..

I was the one that told Corey about the baytril. I had a male 7 years ago that had this problem. I tried every home countryfied remedy I heard of to try and fix it. Some of them started to work but then it came back specially around planting and harvest season when the tractors were the field kicking up dust and what have ya. Finally took him to our local vet that coonhunts as well he gave me some baytril told me how much to use 3 shots I believe and some kind of cream. It took care of it and never had the problem again. I saw corey's females ears and the gunk he was pulling out right before we cut loose this weekend. Her ears are as bad if not worse than my males so that is why I recommended the baytril. Good luck corey hope you get her right she's nice hound to have her laid up to long.

Go to walmsrt get offbrand monostat7 and put in the ears. Go to feed store and get fish flex (keflex or cephlexin) antibiotic hive 2 times a day til cleared up

All of these remedys will work on something, but the fact is if you have a bacterial(infection )that doesnt respond to beta lactam antibiotics you are wasting your time treating with them or mineral oil, monistat etc.
Also, to treat a bad ear infection without doing the sensitivity is just like buying a scratch off lottery ticket.

I learned w my checkbook out...just tryin to save ya frustration

Know the feeling Pat. I was 200 or 300 dollars in before I said screw it and took him in to the vet. Would of saved a few hundred if I just would done it in first place. But you gotta have a honest vet that will treat it right the first time instead of try this stuff then this then that.

Clyde....the culture identifies the bacteria.....the senisitivity is dun on an agar plate introducing that bactetia ti different antibiotics to see which one will kill it an which it has resistance to.
Common drugs are of beta lactam family, but more and more infections of the ear have become beta resistant.......

My dog suffered for 18 months while I fiddle sticked around trying alotta voodoo medications...won't happen again tho.

Thanks! No vet I've ever been to has done that.

I wouldnt know the difference either but I have worked in the dairy industry for 35 years and we routinely culture milk samples and do sensitivity testing to identify different types of mastitis in dairy cows. Then ya can treat the infection and beat it the first time....
Like I said one vet charged me 125 bucks and hadnt even brought up the culture word, when I moved on to a different vet I asked her about culturing and she says...yeah wasting time and money if we dont. Two different vets ...two different ways of business.....

Exactly! Lots of vets are bad about prescribing a broad spectrum antibiotic for whatever ailment comes in the door, without even finding out what they're dealing with. If it's yeast or mites, you can guarantee you'll be going back when it doesn't work.
