If looks do not matter...why????

There are guys that say "Looks" don't matter, yet when a dog is advertised for sale, the first thing everyone ask for are pictures.

What am I missing here?

Guess they want to see if it really is the breed of dog advertized.

I know ability is the main thing, but to me it's not the only thing. When/If I'm talking to someone about a dog, I want to know about it's ability, mouth, desire, but it's just a matter of time until I ask, "What does it look like?" I want to know about it's head, ears, muzzle, feet, and color.

I'm not convinced, when we say "Looks don't Matter", we are being totally honest.
It's kind of like the man who sings the song, "I'm homesick for Heaven," yet, when his chest begins to hurt, he goes to the Dr. to get some of those, "Stay A Little Longer" pills.

Out of one corner of our mouth we are saying, "I don't care how a dog looks as long as it can get the job done." Out of the other corner we're asking, "Got any pictures you could send to me?"

A good looking dog is in the eye of the beholder. A good looking dog to me may not be to you. People are suckers for a good looking dog. . more important that there healthy. As far as wanting to see pictures of them. Some guys ugly dog could be someone else's good looking dog. Color is a factor also markings could make it a good looking dog. The way there built. If you got a good one with what's on the inside. Then you would like for that to go along with what's on the outside. Some like to look at a good looking dog. Some that show dogs want it for that. But should not judge ability because its good looking or not. . I personaly like to have a coondog with the looks to go with it.

Too many times looks will trump ability. When that happens you are going backwards. There is a very broad spectrum when it comes to human beings and what is considered a good looking hound. I guess the question each of us need to ask ourselves is ... Just how much do looks matter?

It's true, looks are subjective...the guy that thinks his 165 pound Blue Gascon is the best thing he ever saw vs. the guy who likes his 45 pound Redbone that gets thru thick stuff, gets treed quick and don't eat $150.00 a week vs. the guy who don't hunt his Walker show dog but wins every show he's put in.
All that aside, people don't often tell the truth. The truth is that if all those guys that say "looks don't matter" had their choice between a great looking hound and a sway back with a severe overbite and feet like a duck but both dogs have the same ability in the woods hunting...which one do you really think they will choose???
Good looks {confirmation} has its purpose. But when someone has a dog that lacks good confirmation it's easier for them to dismiss it as unnecessary than to admit their dog don't look good. It's just like running off game...ever notice that this is something everyone else's dog does???

X2. I didn't marry an ugly woman and I won't own an ugly dog. I refuse to accept less than good looks and ability although I will admit it's becoming increasing difficult to get both in one package.

I've known a few guys to pass on a pup because they were concerned with its looks, then kick them self once it got a little older and more developed. I've known a few other guys who let looks get the best of them and then were sick when they seen what kind of coon tree'r they turned out to be. Everyone wants something that appeals to their eye but I learned a good lesson a long time ago..... LOOKS DONT TREE COON. I've been lucky. I love the looks of what I have and yes, they tree coon.

I think people ask first about the pedigree way before they ask about looks. I think most ask about the looks just so it isn't something they just cant stand to look at, not that it has to be a perfect 10. yet if the dog is powerfull, 99% of hard coonhunters can overlook looks. witg puppies its probally alittle different, its a crap shoot anyways, so might as well start out with a good looking one

If I have a choice between two dogs with the same ability I will pick the good looking dog everytime, however if they have different ability I will choose the coondog everytime

As far as asking for a picture, You can tell more than is it "pretty" from a picture. You can see if it looks like the dog has been taken care of, if it looks healthy, if it looks tone like its being hunted.

nobody likes ugly. weather it be a truck, house, girls, dogs, etc!

I HUNTED THE ONE OF THE UGLYIEST HOPUNDS EVER .. BUT THERE WAS NOT A HARDER HUNTING TRACK RUNNING COON TREEING SOB ANY WHERE IN THE COUNTRY... HE WAS A HALF FACED TICKED UP CALICO EARED... COON TREEING OUT FIT... LOOKS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ABILITY PERIOD.....

I wont feed a dog that's a 1/2 a dog tall and two dogs long, let alone hunt one.. color and markings I can live with, but they must be built for speed and endurance.

I

can live with one not being great looking IF it's all coondog and has everything i'm looking for. I drove to Ky once to buy a young nitech dog that i had check on and felt was worth looking at. I got there saw the dog and didn't even go hunting with him. He was so ugly i didn't want to be tempted if he looked great in the woods.

Made me LOL!!!! I'll bet the horse and dog belongs to the wife. lol!!!

We can say ability only, but one is going to be hard pressed to make me believe looks don't matter.

Many points have been made regarding pictures that I haven't thought about, such as health, ect...

Like one guy who said, "I'm glad everyone is not like me, because everyone would have wanted to marry my wife."
Another fella spoke up and said, " If everyone was like me, nobody would've had her!"

A local coon hunter called and left a message with my wife. Said he wanted me to meet the new women in his life. Then added that she still had most of her teeth, and didn't look half bad in the day light.

My wife asked me does he really say those things about the women in his life, or was it a coon hunting thing. Then you could see the gears click, and she quickly added I better never hear you talk about me that way!

Either way, love is in the eye of the beholder.

I have seen a short legged and cow hocked dog make her self look much better than the imagination could ever dream. Her name was Annie. To this day, I still can't believe she actually caught a deer and bayed it.

I think I'm with dan on this one. I can handle color and markings. To me ability ability ability is number 1. Mostly why I ask how he/she looks is cause one I still want it to be built like a hound and make sure its body is built the way suppose to be so it performs like its suppose to. Color and markings I leave that to show people.

In the walker breed they are suckers for the blanket back / red headed looker .... I'll take my open spotted dog over all that every time - some may think he's ugly - some may like it , beauty is in the eyes of the beholder ... myself I prefer how a dog looks treeing coon ! I've had pretty good luck with the odd balls & if they come up with a purple & green polka dot dog that gets it done right I'll own one .
