Breaking scent

How well do they work and how to use them or are u better off using Tritronics I think my male dog may be running deer but he don't run it fast and he only does it once in a while I'm pretty sure it ain't a coon cause he goes deeper than usual about .73 of a mile and comes back any info appreciated

Tri-tronics!!!!! Id find out for sure what hes running first. Alot of differnt ways you can break one. If you dont want him running them at all you can find a feild full and dump him out. First bark lite him up. My self ill let one get in their about 800-900 yds and just bump them and they get were they just fall off on a coon. Either method has to be repeated time after time to have success. Lots of differnt ways and everybody has a differnt opinion on what they want their hound to do. I want mine to get open and dont care if he opens on a tree frog as long as he finishes with a ringtail.

a few guys will say breaking scents will work but most will say they won't. I think the reason for that is because every dog is differant,some are easy to break and some are down right hard headed. Tri tronics would be the best way in my opinion because it can be used as a training tool and a wide range of trash breaking-fox,deer,possum,ect

Well he won't touch a possum never has but he started this and I think he will be easy to break he's a quick learner I just don't kno if I should turn him loose in a field full of them or not I've heard thts a good way and I've heard it ain't I'm just looking for options

if you think it's deer turning him out in a feild with deer in it is the best way to do it just don't encourage him turn loose like ya going hunting he runs over and opens on the deer lite him up but don't say a word to him that way he thinks the deer hurt him not you when i shock 1 on trash i try to put them on the ground let them up put em right back down usally 2-3 times will do it if thier smart

that is just plain STUPID saying something like that dont care what he opens on guess you are a want to be a big name comp hunter thats what is wrong with the hunts some people dont care about having an honest strike dog just get struck run sh## half the night fall treed half the time slick and ruin other people's night because they just dont care and let me guess when someone calls you out you say your dog is dead broke knowing dam well your lying and guys who want a 1st strike trash running drop off and get treed dog are ones who want to gripe about a babbling idiot in the cast because they cant get 1st strike I know right the heck with the honest guy who breaks his dog from off game babbling now I know why you was asking what do you think my dog is running in another post you had on here what dose it matter what he is running as long as he falls off on a tree sounds like thats what he was doing in that post if this offends any one oh well saying they dont care what there dog opens on dont matter as long as they fall off on tree offends me I ended up with them in my cast have a nice day

Like i said everybody has a differnt opion. I dont want mine running one all night. Maybe 5-10 mins dont bother me. It aint my fault yours falls in behind mine and keeps going and ruins your night. What does my dog have to do with you? If i ask what my dog is runnin its because i want to know so i can break him the way i see fit. Not the way you want. Im hunting my dog 95 percent of the time just me and the dog. So why in the hell would i care what you think? You train yours and ill train mine. If hes runnin junk and the judge ask me beleive it or not ill say exactly what i think cause i could care less about a win. I hunt for fun not to get a big name mister. And if i get first strike thats great. If not i wont complain about it. I dont never complain about any dog or what its doing cause mine aint tied to him.

There are basically two ways to use breaking scent...one is to saturate the dog with so much of it for so long that he eventually gets sick of it and leaves the deer alone. The problem with this method is that usually it is more than just the scent itself that the dog likes...he also thoroughly enjoys the chase and depending on how much will tell if the saturation method will work. In most cases it only slows them down and that is temporary at best. I have heard of this used in conjunction with rolling them down a hill in a big barrel of rocks, hanging them up a tree in a big bag and beating on the bag, shocking them in a cage, etc. Personally, before I have to do all that I just get rid of the dog.
The second way scent is used is to spread it on the underside of the dogs ears just before you go hunting. The theory here is that he wont be able to run a deer for a few hours and in that time you should be able to get him on a coon. This sometimes works and sometimes don't as well. Depending on how much the dog loves to run deer. The only surefire method when you have one that absolutely loves it is to put him in a deer pack and go get you another pup to try again. Tri-Tronics will do it most of the time but as mentioned above, most "trainers" have no idea how many times in a row it has to be done to positively break the dog.

to start off I dont let mine run junk ....... why would you want to break your dog off of what ever you was want peoples option on when you let it run deer for 10 min I have been around hounds for 32 years and I have yet to hear a handler in a hunt say yes sir judge my hound is running junk I was in a hunt years ago the judge told me my dog was broke to good there dogs was running a fox he knew it and he nor the other handler would say yep it a fox so here is my question if you hunt by yourself 95% of time why not break the dog ????? Now you said you dont care if he strikes off a tree frog why is that tree frogs dont run anywhere do you just like to hear him stay in 1 spot and bark for 5 -10 ??? Just curious as why someone would say that ??? Do you hunt by yourself because you want to or is it because no one will hunt with you because you let your dog run sh## just to hear him bark ????? Now if I want to listen to a dog run deer I would get a deer dog . But thats just me and I know most Real coon hunter will agree like said I know why people like there dogs to strike and run sh## and they hunt the hunts FACT I just pleasure with quite a few good fellows and none of them let there dogs run shi# either we must be missing something
