Pulling the tree out?

I've heard said many times of about people pulling the tree outta young dogs.Is this just talk or can it be done?If so how do you do it?

Thats terrible and painfull pulling that tree out of that dog !!!!

Im pretty sure he's talking about taking some tree outta a young hound. Slowing it down. Teaching it to finish that track. Yes its true. While you really ain't taking the tree outta it. I've heard it said many times myself.

Sorry guys I should've been more specific. I got a young dog dog 18 months old that is a real track driver but doesn't care much about treeing.This is the first dog I ever had like this.Will drive a coon up a tree locate and tree for a few seconds and then go back to hunting.Ive done bout everything I know to do.This dog has seen prolly 100 coons.She has every trait I like but lacks in tree power.Figured some of you veteran hunters had some ideas on how to help this dog.

matt i had some young dogs like that and they saw less coon than your talking bout. some just dont cut the mustard. knowing when to give up on them is up to the beholder. its hard! goodluck!

She has been a track running machine since bout 6 months old.Never really wanted to tree but will tree good with old dogs if the have a coon.If they don't have a coon she will be gone.While the weather was real bad I got several cage coon and never showed them to her.Just cut the coon loose and waited 10-15 mins.Cut her loose and she's treed ever single one like a pro just kinda loose on the tree and won't stay long.Ive been hunting her steady but I'm afraid she will come in heat soon and set back the progress.Thanks for all the input.

Here's one thing to try. Stop shooting coon to her. I mean shoot none out. A guy once told me a dead coon is why a pup starts milling around the tree. Said cause that's the last place it got a good dose of coon scent was on the ground at the tree. Might be a load of manure but it sounded good. Try it and see. You have nothing to lose.

Yeah that's true.I took her out Monday night and she managed to tree 3 coons and one den.She didn't do a impressive job but non the less showed me some coons.Every hunt she's hunting deeper and trying harder but not improving on staying treed.Guess I'm gonna have to put another 20-30 nights on her and see how she does.Thanks for all the input.

though I usualy single a young dog out and hunt it alone, sometimes from the start, being lose on the tree is one time I WILL hunt them with others.

the dogs on the tree get fed coon, the one who is lose on the tree, milling ect....gets tied back and has to watch..i make a big performance out of it too.....lots of petting ect

usualy if they have any hope of coming out of it it works.....also works for those who are fairly solid on the tree but get in the habit of milling from being fed too many coon.

never ever never let a dog who is milling at the tree or comes back in after you get there have any part of a coon...ma

Though I haven't did it lately I was tieing her back a lot and rolling the coon out to other dogs.She went crazy when I did that and it seemed to help.

had a young walker male years ago that did the same thing.hunted with old dog and treed in a small tree with 3 kitten coon,pup just running around and treeing some,not good or steady.at witts end decided to tie him to tree and leave.came back 2 hours latter, treeing like he had been doing it forever. think young coon got to moving around and chattering,got his attention.shure did push the right button for him. problem solved. don"t tie with anything he can chew thru and get loose.keep dog safety in mind [good luck]

I have had a couple over the yrs that sound bout like your female. as a last resort I have done this and it worked on a couple and a couple never did get it.
its all about making the dog want the coon more.
hunt her ALONE and when she does tree a coon alone, tie her back and roll the coon out and don't let her have it. let her nut up trying to get it but don't let her have it. throw the coon back up in a crotch of the tree or one close by. let her tree on it and then pull her off and drag her away while she is still wanting it and don't let her have it at all. just leave the coon hanging there. only do it on a few coon, you should see that she is checking trees more while walking her out on a leash. after that just keep her tied back and rollin the coon and not letting her touch it. just kick it around in front of her trying to make her nut up trying to get it. then drag her back to the truck and go to another spot. unless she starts staying treed she would not get her mouth on a coon. do this while hunting her alone and it may work, the problem with doing it while hunting with other dogs is you are teaching her to tree because the other dogs do and not because she wants the coon bad enough to stay treed. even if it does work she may never be a dog that you can feel is a stay put tree dog. I had a female that would not stay treed. I always tied her back. one night a coon came down and ran off and she saw it run off. I will not let a dog run a coon away from a tree and I did not let her. after that the bitch stayed treed on ever tree she treed on. some times you will find the on button by accident. some times you will never find the on button. just depends on how much and how long you have the patience to try before you give up.
