Wanting to move South

I live in Northern Wisconsin and this winter is kicking my butt! I know it's been colder everywhere this winter than normal but it has been below zero more times this winter than the last 3 combined and we have snow up to my horses bellies. The wife has always hated winter and I have finally given in to the idea of possibly moving south and starting over. To make a long story short is there anywhere like the southern Indiana and south where a guy can get a little farm and have land to hunt (public?) and still find a job? It sure would be nice to be able to coon hunt a little bit longer in the year also. Our season here opened in the middle of October and is closed for the 9 day deer season and by the time deer season was over the first of December we had like 2 more days and it's been snowing and below zero ever since! Anyways knowing what you guys that live further south know where would you lean if you were me? Thanks for any info.

Personally. Id look around Monticello Ga. Jobs fairly close. Land not real high. A crap load of public land. I mean hundreds of thousands of ac. And the coon population is decent.

i hope you're not a liberal. we've got enough of the northern liberals transplanted here. they come down here thinking they're gonna save us and then try turning the south into another liberal med west. i saw a bumper sticker the other day that read, "I don't care how you did it in connecticut", i met two marines today on game land. they were whinning about how we hunt deer with dogs, like we're not the sportmen t hey are, they they bitch about how the deer are so small compared to the hugh ones they have in ny.

I am about the furthest thing from a liberal that you will ever find! I am not looking to move to Wisconsin in the south. Winters just really suck here and I am sure most of the people that relocate south have alot of money and have somewhat of a "I'm better than you" attitude. I believe when people move somewhere (whether it's another state or country) they should conform to the customs and ways of the place that they are moving not vice versa. Like when the Somali's moved to a town by us and now we have to hire people to interpret for them at the local clinics. Instead of them just learning english like it is suppose to be here. I believe that if what your doing doesn't directly hurt me then I don't care. I will always support any type of hunting whether I do it or not because we as hunters need to stick together, and running deer with dogs is a deep southern tradition. I not only support that but would love to try it someday. I probably share more of your views than I do with alot of the people from my home state. I hope that answers your questions.

i guess i didn't mean you personally but northerners in general. but, i appreciate your reply. so often i see tree stands that's been put up by marines for other places. i can see why they put them there. where they're from that kind of spot would be a good place to shot deer. but here they will almost never see a deer because the deer keep to the really thick brush for cover and brouse. they almost never wonder into the open so that you can see them from a tree stand unless you've found a good trail and put a corn pile on it.

It is amazing how a spot that would be crawling with deer in one place, doesn't have any in another! How many dogs do you dump on a deer run at a time?

just so you'll know, l. lyle is a character. he is well loved on here because he is so entertaining. please don't be offended. he's just role playing.
to answer your question, you dump as many as you have. i don't hunt deer except those lieing on the side of the road but i have been talked into standing on a picket line in the hopes of shooting a deer the dogs run by. that's how i learned to sleep standing up. if i hadn't got into coon hunting w/dogs i might have run deer instead or even rabbits, anythings with dogs chasing something. come on down, maybe you will show a good yankee.

I figured it wasn't a big deal and maybe I was a little harsh! I have pretty thick skin but was super tired when I read that (been plowing snow and fighting the cold!) I have always been interested in deer dogging and don't know a thing about it. I was kind of figuring it would be a multiple dog drop but wasn't sure if it was like how we run coyotes (and bear) where we dump a cold trailing dog until it's jumped then start dumping dogs to put pressure on. Thanks for the info though!
