Protein ? for pups

Im feeding Diamond EA thats 32%protein an 25%fat. Ive got a 9 month old that I hunt 2 to 4 times a week depending on conditions about 2-3 hrs a trip . My ? is that to much protein for him right now . He has been on Diamond EA since he was 8 weeks old .

Some will say leave him on it till one year . At nine months I say atleast 26/18 in a quality feed . I never feed any less than that for any dog being hunted .

"Too much protein" is one of the biggest wives tails in the dog industry. You'll see people swear that too much protein will burn a dogs kidneys, give them hotspots, and all sorts of crap. What they won't tell you is that it was garbage protein to begin with because they just don't want to accept that they aren't as good of dogmen as they want you to believe. Pour on the protein but make sure it is quality. Junk at any level will burn a dogs kidneys and give them other health issues. Good clean protein in amounts 20% or greater is what the dog NEEDS. With the good protein also comes good fat. This is also vital to a dogs energy level. Pour it on and hunt the hair off them. If they are in a maintenance mode, they'll get fat and you'll have to back it down. But don't give up the quality when you do.

EA is a very good food with a quality protein. It is a very good pup food in my opinion. I raised more than one pup from 6 months on up with the exact same feed. I think it is one of the better feeds out there. I like the fat content also. A dogs immediate energy comes from the fat in the food that it consumes. Alot of people will clain the numbers are to high for summer. Ask them to proove why they claim that and most won't be able to. I have fed it year-round to dogs that are hunted hard and dogs that are just kenneled. They are all awesome and I get alot of compliments on how my dogs look. JMO

I, myself, have found the same to be true with Diamond Maintenance formular, yellow bag @ $22/50lb.
We are talking about % (per Cent). The thing that has made money launderers rich for centuries. You got a 10%loan or a 3% loan???
% is a good way to get screwed unless you know what they are claiming on the sack.LOL, if you pay big money then the reason you cannot buy a bag of feed that is 100%protein and 100% fat is because all you can get is 100% of something in a sack, unless you are playing Funny Numbers . But we are talking in the range of 30% Protein and 20 % fat versusus 24% protein and 18%fat for double the money?. Just throw them 1/3 more scoop and they quickly get MORE Protein and Fat and their belly is fuller.

I feed Diamond Naturals EA too. I noticed a huge difference in my dogs when I switched to it a few years ago. Some folks may get confused though. Regular Diamond dog food is garbage. It has to be the Diamond Naturals. Yes it costs more, but your gonna get what you pay for with dog food in most cases and Diamond Naturals is the best for the buck I have found. If I hit the lotto I would consider switching to Blue Buffalo. lol.
I am now feeding a pregnant female EA and her pups will be fed that as well.

X2!! Quality a must! I raise chickens so I supplement with scrambled eggs which is the most digestible protein you can give them. Dont overfeed, remember quality over quantity,

I raised a litter I kept a self feeder in the kennel for momma full of diamond ea so the pups just started eating it so I kept the feeder full but started to notice when they were 5 weeks old they were all walking funny it almost looked like rickets, took them to the vet. Vet said their bones were growing to fast because of the high protein put them on puppy chow and vitamins and they all cleared up but the puppies looked and acted awesome on it though

Posted by CSnowgren on 01-18-2014 06:15 PM:

Don't ever feed a rich food using a self-feeder. Feed for function and performance when using rich food. Pups are notorious for gorging themselves and couple that with their digestive challenges at a young age, can result in exactly what Treye experienced.

Yep. Excellent advice.

Not real sure why anyone would feed any hunting dog with a self feeder. Does not make good sense to me. But that just me.

Big difference in the ingredients between the Maintenance and EA. Big difference between the two period. Anyone who hunts a hard going dog several nights a week, several hours a night, knows it takes a high quality food to keep him up to peak performance. I have tried Maintenance, it does not work. EA will.
