Why do you get an hourly rate for them? In all honesty, do you really spend 1,300 hours with them? Or is that what the mother spends with them? Or is that the time they spend at your home?

I guess it just seems to me if you're getting paid by the hour, it has become a job and not a passion. I understand trying to break even but reality of breeding dogs is, that were always going deeper into the hole. Even the more expensive breeds (I.e bull dogs) there is more cost, and risk, with every breeding. and as well, any person I've ever seen that makes it a job/tries to make money at it, either never succeeds... Or, ends up not breeding to better the breed but, rather, to make more puppies to sell.

Please don't mistake this as I'm saying your a puppy mill, I'm just saying, please don't become one lol

And you didn't even include what it cost to champion the sire and dam, the genetic testing you did on the sire and dam, stud fee, AI if needed, veterinary care (and lucky she didn't require a section in the middle of the night), registration of the pups, microchipping, toys, laundry, days off work.

Yeah, so when some people say puppies cost too much, I invite them to look elsewhere and good luck.

Don't ever worry about a conscientious breeder becoming a "puppy mill". (That's AR language, BTW.) It's far too much work, and too expensive, and too stressful to be done very often.

I took the hour wage at 24 hrs. a day for 8 weeks and trust me, I go nowhere as long as I have pups, it is minimum wage. My life is on hold til they are sold.

The wormer I usually is 2x as strong as Nemex, I guess I should have broke down each dose into the actual price.

Oh, I forgot the Albon treatment I do as a preventative now. That was $40 a bottle, but I didn't nowhere use a whole bottle

Puppy pads are what I use in the bottom of the pen that sits on my kitchen floor and the pups stay in after they can walk. Better then newspaper. But I go through a ton of them, if I want to keep the smell out of the house.

Raise a whole litter by bottle feeding . Up every 2 hrs in the beginning feeding , burping & stimulating to make them poop & pee . Then complain about the hours & money you spend .
Even without the whole bottle feeding thing a lot of cost & trouble goes into raising a good healthy litter of pups not to mention the special feed & up keep of your female - plus stud fee .
As for puppy pads I've never used them , next time go to dollar general get you a couple of the low pile rubber backed rugs for your welping box . They can be thrown in the washer and switched out so pups are always on something clean &
dry . They stay put so you don't have to worry about suffication .
Most of us don't make a cross to make any money - we make it so we can have a pup or 2 from that cross and sell the rest . If your one pup turns out you've recouped every dime spent plus some .

I just set down and figured out my expenses to raise this litter of 7 Doxie pups from newborn to 8 wks. old. STUNNED is all I can say!

1,344 hrs. @ $7.25 per hr. = $9,744.00
3 bags of dog food @ $25 each = $75.00
De-wormer @ $65.00 a qt.
7 puppy shots @ $7.50 each = $52.50
Registration = $18.00
50 bags of puppy pads @ $7.50 each = $352.00

For a grand total of $10,306.00 or $1,472.50 per puppy

And the very first thing most of them say "Will you take less?' or 'Why do you ask so much for them?' I'm going to show them this! This, of course, doesn't count cost of parents up keep.

I sell them for $400 and have 6 to sell, did I make anything?

Sounds to me like you made out pretty good! Take away the ridiculous figure of $9744 for taking Care of your own dogs and your left with $562! When all 6 are sold you will make $1838 off one litter. Not bad!

Every time I hear someone complain about how much our dogs/puppies cost us , it reminds me of a song called " No Charge ".
Look it up , you might learn something.

On average hour many hours a day do you spend with each puppy? They are in my house for 8 wks. and every single day, I put in at least 12 hrs. or more with those pups. I will never MAKE money at this. What I'm trying to point out is how much it really does cost to raise a litter of puppies. And then you have people asking you if you will go down in price, sight unseen.

Go to WalMart or Dick's Sporting Goods or any place else and choose your item and then ask them if you can have it at a reduced price. What do you think their answers going to be? Everyone wants something for nothing. And when it is your reputation on the line, you try to do the best you can. I'm sorry, but that is worth something! Now, I will ask you, do you over a full year guarantee with every puppy you sell? I do and that says something, if you won't stand behind what you sell, you shouldn't be doing it!!!!

His calculator ain't broke he is taking the $2400 and minusing the $562 expenses which makes you clearing $1838.

I think its great you spend so much time with your pups and put your life on hold and go nowhere while you have them, BUT, you chose to do that. You can't figure that into the cost. I have raised several litters of pups. All raised to be healthy. I still hunted at night. I still went to work everyday. As a matter of fact, life was as normal as can be. You chose to put your life on hold for the pups and raise them in the house with over $300 worth of puppy pads. But in fact, alot of your expenses are not needed. The price of the wormer alone is way more than needed for a litter of 8 pups. Nemex, main ingredient= pyrantel promate. Go to the vet and ask to buy it. Every vet has it because many, many vets use it to deworm pups brought to them. Just pennies per pup to worm every 2 weeks. JMO

ps

I do think you are alittle underpriced on the registration tho. Most of us have alot more than that in the papers because we register the pups in ukc and pkc

I think your driving up the cost on your pups by using needless stuff your obviously not trying to make money just put FIRM on the price and it slows down some of the BS deal makers I would be imbarrased showing those crazy figures To bad we can't sell finished dogs by the hour Gas Room and Board Feed Medicine You wouldn't be able to afford them lol

I'm sure this will probably amaze you but I did that math in my head!😱

Should I get paid to stay home with ny child too? I choose to stay home with her instead of working... Isn't that the same choice your making?

+ stud fee if you didn't breed to your own dog , puppy food for pregnant female & while nursing , wormer for female & booster shot for her before pups are born & 1st puppy shots , heat lamp if you didn't already have one before , welping box if you didn't already have one pup registration ....but still a far cry from her $10,000 for a healthy litter lol .
