Rutting coons

I saw a sight today that I thought I'd never see. I knew coons moved during the rut but never this much. I drove home from work at 9 this morning and in the field in front of my house about 400 yards away were two coon, a cinnamon boar and a regular sow doing the dirty in the field. These two were a good 1000 yards away from any tree, just had a ditch nearby that they had to have been running in. I got home the dogs were going crazy. I did some things off the honey-do list and looked back out around 1130 and they were still out there tangled up. Just caught me by surprised that they were in the wide open for that long and nothing got them. We're not as heavy on coyotes right here this year, but we still have our fair share.

Normally I would have, but I'm on her bad side already and the dogs wouldn't share their houses with me. These Indiana nights get cold without a roof. Lol.

Should have considered swapping her and the dog out. I'm sure the dog would love the house!

I had a neat experience last year. It was the end of bow season and about an hour before dark in January. A coon come out of a den and then not long after another come out. These coons chased each other around the woods in a 75 yard circles. They were up and down about about 15 or 20 trees. Then about 30 minutes later a 3rd and 4th come in to them. I'm thinking the first one was a sow and the other three boars. They chased her around and around up and down till about dark. Then I got down from my tree and scared them off and then they all went into a 2 different dens a few yards away. I then figured out why dogs sometimes have a hard time during the rut in January. That would have been a mess for dogs to figure out.
