Question
I am new to hunting fiest for sq, I have hunted coonhounds my whole life well 22 years of the 38, anyways I've noticed on the cur and fiest sights a lot of people cross cur to hounds fiest to curs, and I'm just kinda queriuos it seems everyone's ok with it? I know in the hounds it happens too but everyone seems to try hiding it, but not in the cur/fiest. So as friendly as you can respond please are you ok with it? If so why? Or why not? I personally wouldn't cross out, but that's just me maybe in these breeds it is ok?

In the squirrel dog world, a good squirrel dog is valuable regardless of papers or whether its cur, cur x hound or what have you. MANY squirrel hunters simply enjoy the sport and papers matter little. It does help somewhat that NKC will register virtually anything as either treeing feist or treeing cur.

I am NOT ok with it... If I wanted a feist, I'd buy one, same as a hound... If I wanted to hunt a hound, I'd go buy one... There are many lines of cur and they all have different styles... If a man went and hunted with more than a few, he could find a line he liked without crossing on other breeds...
Outcrossing to hound or bird dog for example gives hybrid vigor (in a good cross) that is hard to beat. Then there's people that that are hunting crossed up dogs and just arnt experienced enough to see it lol

Then you get the ones that think they know what they are talking about but other than one dog they have bought that someone else raised they really don't hardly have a thing that will tree.

Well being new it really struck my interest seeing all of the out crossing, I seen many coonhounds of other breeds that had what I liked and never crossed to them but I can see the advantage, but I have seen beagle/fiest collie/cur fiest ect and I have a great border collie but I don't see how her herding helps lol they only cross I haven't seen is Great Dane/fiest lol

Not really. Not meaning you any insult or ill but if that is the case every mutt in the world has "hybrid vigor". Yes some of those crosses work well but nothing to do with hybrid vigor. Hybrid vigor does occur in animals but it usually leaves the offspring sterile.

Lots of your so called OMCBA stud dogs have hound in them, just saying. I like a treeing cur because it increases your odds in getting one that will go hunting. It also betters your chance of getting a real tree dog. I also like a dog that I can climb on with both feet when itscrews up, most curs and feist can't handle this. I'm not saying that there isn't good full curs and feist out there because there is. What I am saying though is it increases the odds in getting what I'm looking for by adding some hound.

OK, I used the term hybrid vigor as a generic term meaning crossing two unlike sets of gene pools, assuming most folks would realize I wasn't referring to making mules. When a line bred animal is out crossed, to a animal having some of the same desirable traits, vigor and productivity is often increased. Same thing with dogs. Just sayin'
