Cane Creek Crockett

A few of my last hunts with Crockett... He is young, but gets better every trip. He still has a long ways to go and has some good nights and some bad nights, but we keep going... I've been trying to hunt him 4-5 nights a week, so by the end of the season, he should be cranking...

Mr garner where are you from?

Posted by orchidhunter on 12-13-2013 05:00 PM:

Bubba, Crockett could pass for one of Taylor Crockett's Plott dogs.

I also own a litter mate sister to Crockett... UMCA OMCBA NKC registered mountain curs! But thanks for the observation.

Great pics

...and nice looking cur dog!

Its seems to be getting where when some folks see these full size curs, they think they are plotts, or some kind of hound and such.....

I understand that the majority of folks in the cur and feist arena are squirrel hunters and 'size don't matter' and we have mini curs and such...which were called feist back in the old days. Yes, you could actually have feist and curs from the same litter of pups depending on size!!

However, and with exception, the majority of cur dogs of old were 'full size' as referred to by some and were broad chested with well sprung ribs with tight flanks carrying the look of a fine tuned athlete.

I was at the omcba spring hunt around 1980. I was standing next to a long beard, rough looking fellow that looked like he just came down off the top of the mountain or something. We were watching the bench show and he was moaning and grunting and shaking his head. I ask him what was wrong. He said 'they' have just about ruined these dogs. I ask what do you mean? He said, and I quote, "look at those dogs on the bench, it looks like both front legs are coming out of the same whole they are so narrow chested". I introduced myself to this fellow. He said his name was Roger Hoover!

I am surely glad we have some folks keeping these full size dogs alive and well! Not that there is anything wrong with the smaller cur dogs but we at least have a choice!!

I have one young Kemmer male that is around 40 lbs but I sure like the full size cur dogs, especially for hunting at night in the swamps!!

Great looking dog!!

I surely suspect that the old time cur dogs were mixed with a combination of what was good and what was available. No one even thought about any type of pure bred cur dogs back then isolated on a mtn top much less a registered dog. However, these old time cur dogs obtained a certain phenotype or similar appearance and was referred to as a Mtn Cur dog. The genotype or genetics may have been far from similar or of like kind but appearance wise they were establishing themselves as a unique breed of dogs.

Those certain dogs deemed as foundation stock were the starting point of establishing a breed of hunting dogs like all the other breeds of hunting dogs such as the Walkers, Blueticks, Black and Tans, Plotts, etc...... The Original Mtn Cur Breeders Assoc. was established to supposedly promote and preserve this breed of dog based on the foundation stock ORIGINALLY deemed as the true Mtn Curs with the phenotype and hunting styles that define these dogs in the breed standards.

I have never saw where the OMCBA had a policy of Open Registration or Single Registration for cross bred dogs. So I assume that they Originally wanted to preserve the breed based on the foundation stock of dogs.

I understand what has been going on from basically the beginning and the wheel is being reinvented daily but that don't make it right.

I am glad for certain folks that took what was given to them and has bred true for generations and have produce cur dogs that anyone would be proud to go to the woods with.

The 'want' for name recognition and greed has devastated this breed from its original origin.

However, with all the 'rip rap' these dogs have stood the test of time and we still have tree dogs today even if they are not even close to the original stock of dogs for the most part.

I, like most of the rest, think it is a crying shame for someone to lie about the parentage of a dog for whatever reason.
