training.. Whats the difference??

First off, I'd like to introduce myself. I'm a 36 yo father of 3 living it up in the hills of KY.. I've coon hunted in my younger years with family, friends, or who ever would let me tag along..

My 16 yo daughter has followed me anywhere hunting, fishing, or trapping it doesn't matter.. Now she wants to start coon hunting which is fine with me.

I have always loved red bones, the older type long floppy eared dogs, and have found 2 pups.. now my question!!

When training them from pup to finished dog, what's the difference in training a dog for competition vs a decent tree dog??. what traits do you look for when your starting them??
These pups are bred about as good as one could ask for in my eyes.. And she has her heart set on competition hunts..

I know the odds of it happening, but I want to give them the best chance I can foe hers and the dogs sake!!

I'd say alot of it is genetics.

A hard going, stay treed, hard treeing hound that conisistently has the coon has an aweful lot to do with what's between their ears. Along with them being able to reproduce that if you want pups out of what has become a prized hound once they are trained. Now sure hunting them and how they are trained has plenty to do with it but most of it in my opinion is naturally there or it isn't. You might get lucky with any breeding and get a good competition hunting hound but the first place to start to me is investing in a good competition huntinh bred pup and then move on from there. Apparently, from opinions of others on here the hardest thing to find is a hound that gas plenty of natural drive to hunt and that is something that if it isn't there naturally I really don't think you can train a hound enough to fix.
Now if ya have a good competition bred hound I'd say anymore your chances are pretty decent at getting one that can do more than just tree a coon. Of course that is the original objective but once they are doing that efficiently there are several other things you can do to insure that they fit the mold of the way the hunts are designed, as long as they have the brains for It. Also something that is pretty important is hunting them plenty on their own so that they have the confidence to do what they need no matter what the others are confused about.
As far as you question goes a good competition hound is going to be a decent and accurate tree dog. If it's not then it won't be much good for pleasure or competition. I seen a pile of nice Redbones go that have won some of the biggest hunts there are to win, have beat some of them, and have been beat by others. They all got gone, got treed, and stayed.

As THE COONDOG 76, stated its in the genetics. U train um to load, come when called, load on command, and all the obedience tpye stuff. If its not in them to hunt u cant train it into them. Do ur home work when looking for the rite dog.

Training difference.

Genetics are most of it. Training for competition is different. In my opinion you will win more, if the dog has been trained mostly by itself. You need the dog to be able to do its own thing and not pay too much attention to what the other dogs are doing. So train it alone and hunt it alone the majority of the time. That being said, mix it in with other dogs on occasion too. You don't want the dog worried about strange dogs or being independent to a fault.
Most important the dog needs to go hunting (don't walk hunt the dog). In competition hunts they usually turn loose and stand in that spot until dogs get treed. If your dog hunts out 150 yards and circles back around to check in with you, that won't be very good.
You need a dog that you/her can hear well and be able to pick out in the crowd. So the louder the better :-).

Well said Darrin. It takes a lot of nights in the woods in all conditions to train a competion hound. Some it takes more than others but it takes hours in the woods with you and that one hound. I havnt trained very many competion dogs but the one I have trained is still developing and has done very well for me. Consistency pays off, if you see a fault in the hound, work on it. You can make a dog more independent with alot of work, but the dog must have the drive to want to learn and develop, just as in any breed of dog. Weather it's a cattle dog, Coondog, Labrador, beagles, or just a house dog that you want to train to do different things. I'm a firm beleiver that a dog can be a competion and a good hunting companion as well with some work. Dogs will be dogs and they will make mistakes. None are perfect and you are not going win every cast but as long as they please there owner that's what really matters. I hope you find what you are looking for and it's great to see you wanting to start. It's a great sport with lots of good people involved in it.
