advice for starting a pup

I have a 7 month old female redbone that I am trying to start up. My 1 1/2 year old male started up right away at 5 months, no problem. Never have had any problems with him being afraid of coons, and when they start hissing and growling at him, it just makes him want them more! haha. I am working on finishing him off, and starting my female, but she is a little more challenging.
I showed her a coonhide once when she was about 10-12 weeks old, and she had a blast with it. I took it from her and just showed it to her again about a week ago, and she wanted it like crazy! She hasn't quite got the "treeing" part down, but she sits there and whines for it. When she gets ahold of it, she locks on, and it takes two of us to get her jaws open and get it back from her.
I have walked her in our woods a couple times, and just let her do what she wants. Every time, she ends up running our creek and ends up at a tree. She doesn't make noise, but she sits there and looks at me like "there is something there, but I don't know what". I know she is following a coon track because beside her pawprints in the mud, are coon prints.
The problem is, she is timid around coons. I had her out with my male and our buddies female redbone and female bluetick, and we had a caged coon for their female red and blue, and my female to train with. She would go towards it, but then back away, then get a little closer, then back away. I ended up just taking her back to my truck and putting her in the box, because I don't want her being afraid of them.
What should I do to get her going on coons, and not be afraid of them? I considered letting her mess with a freshly shot coon, so she kinda realizes that the hide is actually on a body, but I am not sure. I just don't want to ruin her, as she shows a TON of potential!

A dead coon shouldnt ruin her. If it does it probably wasnt meant to be lol. She is still young yet too, so I wouldnt be too worried if she is coon crazy or not yet. Ive heard before that redbones are late bloomers, not sure if its true or not. Some one on one time with a caged coon could help also. Its hard to say what a pup needs unless you are able to read it.. Sounds like you are doing a good job and she just needs a little more time for the instincts to come out.

Thanks for the advice! I figure I will just continue to let her be a puppy, and work on her knowing her basic obedience commands (I am a certified dog trainer, so I like for all my dogs to know their basics so that customers don't think I don't know what I am doing haha). She definitely shows potential, just needs some time, and I figure I will let her come along to coons on her terms, whether it's a couple of months or a couple of years from now.

Probably just not ready yet. Wait a couple weeks and show her a coon again, if she still scared wait a couple weeks and try again. Some just mature faster than others. If you read walk with wick books he tells you to not even start them till they are 1 year old.

My male was coon crazy at 5 months old and my female was terrified of the coon. They are 9 months old now and she is more coon crazy than he is. Just takes a little time. When they are ready they will start.

it dosent sound like she is scard of a coon if she will lock on one.
i have seen alot of dogs scard of a coon in a cage. hold the dog and let the coon out of the cage in a open field . wait before you let the dog go ,make sure the coon can climb before the dog can catch it. see if this helps with a cage.
tie the pup up at the trees with your dogs and dont let her get the coons if she does not trees. you can hang the dead coon in a tree just out of reach a see if she will tree on itand let her have it but dont do this alot this could make the pup a tree jacker

Thank you for the advice guys! I am going to try to catch another cage coon this weekend/coming week. Haven't had too much luck catching them lately. Been catching a lot of possum, cats, and squirrels. -_-

Try tying her back away from where the dogs are baying the caged coon. If she shows any interest in wanting to join the fun, drag the cage back and forth in front of her but keeping it our of her reach. NEVER try to lead her up to the coon in the cage. Baying the coon has to be her idea and most likely when she's ready, she will.

Just do the simple thing!

Your pup was not bred to bark at a coon in a cage and looks to show no interest so this is what I would do! Why continue doing the same!! Time for a change in the right direction! I've owned a few over the years that acted like yours. Just introduce her to the timber at night and let the genetics take over. If she has it in her to run and tree game it will show up in time. If she's goes hunting with your other hound and keeps busy,continue to hunt her but just a few nites per week. If she is not willing to go out and hunt,put her up and give it a month and try it again. If she goes hunting and your other hound trees a coon,just tie her back,shoot the coon out and make sure it is dead. If she shows interest in wanting to join the fun when the coon hits the ground,cut her loose. If she gets in on the coon,you can try to hang it in a tree to see if she will tree on it but something tells me she has had to much of this already with the coon hide! Too much sight treeing is a sure way to make one tree but when they don't see it up a tree,interest is lost. Everytime a pup trees by scent alone and then you hang one up to get it fired up more,you just took one step backwords!Messing with a coon in a cage is nothing more than pleasing to the one that owns the pup if they tear into it! If it doesn't,right away they get down on the pup!It has nothing to do with the youngster running and treeing them in the woods! Again,expose her to the timber and if she has it,it will happen!! Forget about the caged coon at this point!! JMO! Good luck with it!!

Thanks for all the great advice everyone! Haven't been hunting much lately due to work and a crap ton of snow that is laying the coons up. But I will definitely have to try these!

Contrary to popular beliefs. Redbones start no different than any other coon hound. Some start early , some late and some not at all.
Had one treeing solo and split treeing at 6 months old.

Most are running and treeing with older dogs at 7-9 months.

Showing a dog a caged coon, is just exposing the dog to the game you wish it to follow.
It sounds to me that you have already accomplished this. Keep her in the thickest coon that you have. Hunt her alone, to avoid her picking up any bad habits. Since you know, she is tracking wild coon. I would avoid showing her anymore caged coon or drags, this also can lead to some bad habits.

She is probably pulling up short due to her limited experience tracking. If she doesn't have the coon, just lead her on, in the direction the trail was, going.

I'm sure she will figure it out.

Female tend to start later than males around here to.
there not as hyper.

Have you had her out at all lately. That warm spell got the coons moving. I didnt go, dont usually in deer season, but a few buddies had some good hunting.
