what are your expectatios of pups hunting?

what do you guys expect out of pups and what age do you expect it? I personally really like to spend a lot of time with young pups just spending time walking them in the woods and socializing them from 8 weeks old. at around 16 weeks of age i'll introduce them to a coonhide and will lay a drag and work on getting them to tree on it by scent only. also I continue taking them on regular daytime walks in the woods. Around 6 months of age I will allow them to tag along on some night time hunts I don't make them do anything that they do not want to do. I will lay a couple night time drags and expect them to run and tree them. by 8 months old I expect them to be treeing easy coon. once they have proved they can tree and easy coon consistently I would like to see them start hunting harder and for them to start trying to tackle more complex tracks. by 1 yr of age I expect them to be fairly consistent coondogs meaning I can take them on good nights and expect to be treeing coons regularly. what do you guys expect out of your pups ?

I try not to put them in the woods until 10 months and certainly don't expect much out of them then. They are babies.

i try not to put a time line on a pup, they are just like people some mature faster then others.

Not all pups are the same. The average pup just starts at 8-12 months old.. Just because a pup starts earlier than that mean they will make anybetter dog than a dog that starts at 12 months or older.. Its how they finish out that makes a dog. It takes 2-3 good kill seasons to make a really nice BROKE dog....Ive seen many night champion dogs less than 2-3 yrs old. I would not call a Finished broke dog..

i'm not saying they have to start at that time but it what I prefer what I really like more than anything is too see that a pup has the capacity to learn and is also eager to please and chet your right its not how they start but how they finish but I believe a good start helps to get the pup on the right track to the finished product kinda like a house you start with a bad foundation all the rest of the work doesn't matter

I have no set timeline for my pups. the earlier they start the nicer but I agree the finished product is way,way,way more important.

Pups

To many people are wanting to have that 6 month old world champion instead of letting a pup grow up. A 1 yr old pup is the equilivant of a 7 yr old kid. How many 7 yr olds do you know that have a full time job? Pay attention to the pup and it will show you what it's ready for. Let them be a pup and have fun also. There is no time line with this, every pup is different. I've seen some super nice pups start off great then hit a wall. It's not a race..... But it's all about how they finish!

I let the dog tell me when they are ready. For breeding purposes, I prefer a pup that shows me some promise (natural ability) by its 1st birthday, but that doesn't mean that I let that date dictate how I train a pup.

Pups are like kids, they all learn and mature at different times. I have had some that started at 6-8 months and I have had some that were 12-18 months before they started. I have had some that showed no interest at first and had some that were gamey from the womb. I just look at it like a family, I had 2 brothers and 2 sisters. We all come from the same parents and I have one super smart brother, and one that is intelligent as well as athletic. Then you have me....lol. I just got a LITTLE of both, we all turned out fine but we did not all do things at the same age. There will always be those that things just come easy, those that really have to work to get it, and those who don't care and don't want to learn.....Same in dogs...Oh yeah and for my sisters, they were all GIRL.
