Question about Kennel Choices

I am wanting to build a kennel on some what of a budget. I was wandering what people's thoughts are on raised kennels? How big of one is a good size for a hound? I was thinking about building the run area 12' long, 5' wide, 5' tall, 1.5' off the ground, plus a 5'x3' box off of the back.

What are some of your guy's thoughts? Would it be better to just build a standard kennel?

I use above ground kennels. They are the Scott brand. 8 feet long and 4 feet wide with the house outside. I would not make the house too big...the dog stays warmer in a house just big enough for him to get in and lay down. I had a concrete floor chain link kennel before I went to above ground type and the dogs seem to like it better. They definitely don't get as many parasites and are easier to keep clean. I use a tie out chain to get them to give to a leash.

Kennels......

I have a 3 run off ground, about 18 ft long, 9 ft wide, and 8 ft tall in center....have had it about 6 yrs and let me say it is a Nightmare to keep clean.........next spring I will be pouring concrete and laying block for the walls and build a roof..........in my opinion concrete is the way to go. Good luck.

How big is a good size for a box? I was going to build it big and put a windbreak wall in it where the dog goes in and walks around the wall to lay down.
