Dog 1= 60%. Dog 2= 33%. Why would you count dens as slicks. They should be counted as circles. Doesnt help percentage but don't hurt it either.

Yep.

Most dens are slick(backtracks/squirrels).

I would not be afraid to discipline a dog on a den that wasn't a real good track.

I don't know about you... but I don't like walking to den trees.

60% & 33% u r way to generous.
IMO the dogs r 30 & 20 % accurate, and yes I M critical.

dog 1 might be starting to get his act together.ive had dogs that the harder you hunted them the more accurate they got,if you layed up a while they would miss.

Just my opinion, but I've never considered most dens to be slick. Most of the dens I've climbed over the years or have been able to get a look into, seem to have coon in them. I guess I wouldn't count them for or against, if I ever really kept track on a dog. That's just me, though.

the old guys use to climb most hotels have more than 1 coon
and most acorn trees can feed more than 1 coon.i figure there
either feeding or go home.

I would be most upset for them not staying if they are young. Right or wrong they should stay treed. How old are the? You can fix a lot of things if they will run and tree game but if they won't tree and stay you will never know what they are doing

Posted by Matt McKinney on 10-27-2013 02:52 PM:

I am critical as well. But if its a true den with a hole I don't see how you can say its probably a slick tree. You don't get minused at a hunt for a den bit you do for a slick so why would count a den as a slick? I personally would not hunt a young dog that started off slick treeing

I made 2 dens last night and saw coon inside both, you will have to explain this theory to me.Why would most dens be slick backtracks and how can you back this up?

Im the same and don't hold a true den with a hole against my dogs. Any thoughts to his dogs getting in groups of cubs? They can mess up even a very good dog

Posted by pamjohnson on 10-27-2013 03:12 PM:

I am not near as critical as most folks. ur getting it done. there prob young. a bad break this time lucky next time. who knows? keep on keeping on. happy hunting!

I believe "if taught" a young dog will learn the difference between ALL 3 TREES.
IMO A DEN IS AN XCUSE to tree. There's only 1 tree worth walking too, and most know what tree that is. U disect the last 30 min. of the WORLD HUNT
( PLAY BY PLAY) and u will understand what i mean.

Posted by Jared Luttrell on 10-27-2013 03:26 PM:

We'll in my opinion if a dog runs a track in there and gets treed and it's a den then my opinion it's in there, and like last night we treed 2 dens and one was on outside and other was in it, and they run both track in there. I have never had none of my dogs just set treed on a den, if they was doing that then that would get me worried but running tracks in there it's legit to me.

I'm sure some dens have no coon and yes I very much want to see a coon. However if the dog runs the track right and trees where the coon went which happens to be a den how can you fault the dog. I understand we are coon hunters not den hunters but dens are part of the hunt no matter how you slice it. Whooping a dog for a legit den is the dumbest thing I have read on this board and theres a lot of dumb stuff on this board.

A dog better get me ALOT more coons on the outside before I believe has has them on the inside !

Not enough coons , and too many slicks.
Neither one of those dogs are going to convince me to give them ANY credit , not even a "maybe" , on those dens.

If a dog makes more dens than open coon i agree there may be an issue , but to think that every den is a slick and every track to a den is a backtrack is just plain silly.

that ain't the funniest thing I've heard on hear, but that's top ten! I know if I wouldn't climbed a bunch a dens in the early 90s i could not have bought the gas to fill that ol ford up.

top ten also. I'm starting to think some of these guys are messing with you or they're hunting retarded coon somewhere with few dens. If you're dogs are 100% slick scold em & send em on. If they keep it up a light switching and so on. Never ever discipline a den you can't make certain a coon is not in. I carried my dad's tree spikes for years and climbed dozens of trees with a coon in at least 80% of them. I wouldn't do it now but $15 was worth it then.

If you know your dog its easy to tell when they back track most of the time if the back track then the track will fizzle out and they become more quite and then come treed the more mouth as the track continues it's usually getting hotter jmo

I turn one loose and it barks but don't put a coon on the end for some god awful reason. That counts against em. Only thing that goes for em is a coon. I can see why we have so many so called 90 percenters now.

It's funny how the big time winners, the great ones, make very few den trees and have coons looking down when you get there... And it's not because "they learned the difference between the 3"
