keeping dogs outside in the cold
I just picked up my 6 week old walker pup today,, the breeder didn't wanna keep him any longer,, its getting cold here in iowa and close to winter,,, Im gonna keep him in my garage until he gets a little older,, how long before you think he can handle the cold winter and go outside in the kennel,, the garage isn't heated but im going to put a heat lamp in there with him,, just don't wanna shock him going outside until hes bigger
If he is 6 months old he should have been outside already!!?? Mine have been outside since 8 weeks old and just put some straw thick in his box and he will be fine !!! I'm assuming he didn't come from Florida or somewhere the temps have been in the middle 80 and your taking him to the middle teens !!!??? But seriously get him a good box and pack it with some good straw and a flap on the door and he will be fine!!
hes only 6 weeks old, not 6 months old,, right now temps are droppin down to the low 30's at night,, he was just weened of his mom, and today is the first day away from his mom and litter mates
if hes 6 weeks old then you better stick with the garage and heat lamp idea , still get it a nice dog house and pack it full of straw even being in the garage !

Your post says 6 months but anyway if he's 6 weeks I would have him inside the house in a dog crate with a radio and some toys and spending a lot of time with him to ease his mind and make the transformation easy as possible on him !! Good luck not outside my thoughts inside the house in crate
if the garage is not heated it will be colder than outside in the
sun be careful with the heat lamp.
Yeah Ky Showgirl is right, that good old sunshine will feel good to him in the day time. Id keep him in the garage with the heat lamp at night or in the house. Then during the day leave him outside.

What I would be doing is making sure the box you have for it isn't too large so a consistant heat can be controlled inside the box! Forget the heat lamp and just use a 125 watt light bulb should be all that is needed. A heat lamp in a box is just to hot for them at this age. Dehydration sure to take place,in cold weather spells death in a hurry!Small box with a flap over the door, lots of straw, plenty of fresh water and food, 125 watt bulb is all that is needed! Pup should do fine with this makeup even if put outside! hang a thermometer inside the box and shoot for a temp of 72 degrees or so. If to hot, lower watts on bulb,to cool increase it! Good luck with it!

Be careful if you decide to use a heat lamp they can start a fire.

they are dogs. keep it in the garage till its 8 weeks..then make sure it has a dog house of some sorts, whether its an actual insulated one, a 55gal drum or whatever. if its not insulated like they said before use some hay or cedar chips work too. He will be fine..jmo

thanks for all the great advice everyone,, at what age does everyone feel that he can stay outdoors and do just fine,, right now I am takin him outdoors during the day so he can get acclimated to the colder temps,, currently in the 40's,, he was born in a kennel and has been outside from the time he was born until I picked him up yesterday, so hopefully hes somewhat used to the cold,, a week ago it was droppin down to the low 30's at night,, then again he did have his mother and littermates to keep him warm
