Is mouth over rated in dogs

You hear a lot about the way in which dogs are describe today . big mouth, Big locate . Blah blah . We are all guilty of it at some point or another. Like now a days if someone you know hunts with a supposed Top hound that's been winning or draws them out ; they come back to the club and you ask them;nice dog? And most of the time they will say yeah , huge mouth awesome The tree dog ... And I've gotta think .. That's not what I asked!! Lol

Most of the time , for me , if I can hear one and they don't out hunt their mouth I'm good . But I've seen some guys with pups that are potentially the best pup or young dog I've ever seen them have ... And they will junk them because they just have an average mouth.

So I guess my question is this . Do hunters today put way too much emphasis in a huge fancy fog horn of a mouth ??

I guess if you can have it all why not! But I always came down to coon treeing ability first and foremost and if they have a big mouth . That's just extra chrome . I just think if you get hung up on a dogs mouth , it's almost as bad as knocking a coon treeing dog for being ugly or having a blue eye or flat feet.... I thought it all had to do with which one was the best coondog . Food for thought

I never really minded the track mouth on a dog as long as I could hear it. I focus more on coon treeing ability.

Loud mouth is extra coon treeing ability is a must. Hard to find it all in one dog still then there's alway's going to be a flaw.

They can fart, burp, whistle or blow a bugle. I just need to hear them to find them and I can't stand these chop mouthed babblers.
If you seen my current hound you would know I don't care about looks.

The idea is that a loud mouth dog will have an advantage over an average dog's mouth if the handler of the average dog can not hear his or her dog.

The part few talk about is truly loud mouthed hounds if hunted hard will start to loose their mouth. I went to hunt with 3 different dogs over the years, and was sorely disappointed when the hound could barely bark at all.

Yes, I believe that loud mouthed dog are over rated. Heck, I am nervous enough hunting an average mouth dog if it gets out of the pocket on land I don't expect to get on.

Yes because ultimately a dog needs to go hunting, get treed, stay treed, and have a coon, with emphasis on having a coon.

If a dog won't go hunting, not much use.
If a dog won't get treed, not much use.
If a dog won't stay treed, again not much use.
If a dog does all of the above mentioned things, but doesn't have a coon, once again, not much use.

If a dog does all of the above, but has a weak mouth, not the end of the world. Perhaps not the best suited for competition, but I guess as long as you can hear it, you could get by.

Mouth essentially has nothing to do with the ability of a dog getting a coon treed.

That being said, give me a big mouth dog that has a coon

To me coon treeing, mouth and looks are equal, I won't even raise one that does not have a good mouth or is ugly. I just like hearing it and just have a hard time feeding one I can't stand to look at.

Mouth Is an extra I have always heard huge mouth here and that and that will hurt you ears blah blah blah most consider mine loud I consider them average or a little above bu have yet to hear anything that hurts my ears a and all that!!!! I heard 3 hounds in the woods one night all had real good mouths and then a little female that had average mouth at best bottom line we never had a problem hearing her as she was always alone and under a coon!!! No problem at all and most times she wasn't 1-200 yards different !!!!!! The only time you need that real big mouth is when you are on a hunt with a bunch of e tooooeerss and you have to hear your dog to call him but if they are alone it don't matter !!!!

Looks, mouth and ability. I want it all. I want a classy dog. If a dog doesn't have a good mouth it's just not as much fun to me. I don't mean they have be a ten. But of coarse I'm very hard of hearing, so my 7 might be a ten.LOL.

No..... At least not for me.

I see mouth as part of the overall package. I don't want to hunt a dog that is a poor track dog, but has a great mouth and is a good tree dog....but I can't enjoy a dog that is a great track dog, good tree dog, and accurate, if I have to stare at the Garmin to see if it is treed because I can't hear it.

I've sold some pretty nice young started dogs because I didn't like their mouth! So for me, it's part of the overall package...

Speaking of which...you ready to come pick out your LOUD pup????? Cause I got a pen full of em!

My opinion on mouth is a bit different....
I don't want no mouth on track........one bark treed.
Like high pitch...carries further.
Gotta be that quick chop to blend in with all the house dogs cause ever time I take somebody with me with one of those big booming hound mouths...it ends up calling the attention of everybody and I end up in trouble.

4 or 500 yards here in lots of places. You'll be out of the ballgame with a average or below average mouthed hound. I like a higher pitched mouth best. One like that is different and you can hear them for a long ways. Yep I've sold a couple because of mouth.

Mouth is very important to me.I like a loud mouth and am really picky about how it sounds.Last 3 hounds Ive raised were all loud so I guess I'm spoiled.When my hound falls treed with that big long LOUD locate and has a coon ant nothin better.Coon treein ability will always be number one in my book.

Gotta be a coon dog first and foremost but I love a loud mouthed hound that drowns all the other dogs out. My old dog has one of the biggest loudest mouths iv ever heard and usually has a coon looking down at him. I'm not trying to brag on my dog at all but I love a bawl on track and a long dying bawl locate then a steady chop on the tree. Plus I'm boarder line deaf and I like dogs I can hear lol

mouth to me is way overrated.we need to breed for accuracy.

I go through a lot of dogs looking for the right mouth and total package. Hearing aids in both ears will make you look at a dogs mouth first thing, no mouth cant hear it.

may depend alot on where you hunt. If I keep one very long I need to be able to hear him ATLEAST a mile cause usually they gonna have to go that far. I would agree that if the farthest they ever get from you is barely a half mile or less then ya a mouth shouldnt matter. I dont care what one looks like as long as I like everything else about m

I like a big loud mouth but only on my hounds not my hunting buddies lol!

If I wanted to hunt a sqeally meally mouth dog I'd hunt a cur. I want to hear a HOUND with a HOUND mouth.

Now, see some of ya jumped from is mouth overrated to weak mouth. That is 2 different topics.

Fact is a truly loud hound if hunted hard will loose their voice. Now, I not talking about what others call loud mouth. I was told I owned one of the loudest females a fella has ever hunted with ... not so much. Mind ya she doesn't have a bad voice and it carries well, but loudest not even close.

The problem here is everyone has a different definition of loud. Loud to me truly hurts my ears.

Its over rated to me, but to some its a must. Its all in what makes you return to the woods night after night. Tone has a lot to do with it for me. I set and listen to my gyp treed the other night from 1.4 miles away,but one of my complaints about her is her mouth. So what is loud? One that covers everything up at 400 yards but because of the tone is hard to hear at a mile? Or one that doesn't drowned out anything but you can hear at a mile1/2 ?

Loud mouth

All I can say is that I have been blessed. My Dozer dog is a coon tree'r. Very accurate. As for his mouth, It is HUGE!!!! The farthest I've ever officially heard him was on a calm cool night, I heard him at 1.7 miles according to the garmin. Most really loud dogs do loose their volume as they get older. Dozer is turning 6 this week and has not lost any volume yet. I didn't ask for the mouth I just got lucky enought to get a dog that can first and for most tree a coon but has the mouth that will turn heads, and his pups are following in daddy's foot steps.

I have a Trackman female that is a sharp chop all the way but has a nice locate. She's not my top pick for her style of mouth but she's good about having a coon.

It's just nice to know when your walking in there, odds are your going to see a coon.
