Honest question about semen dogs
I figure it's a good time to ask since a dog out of frozen semen won the world. What are your opinions on using frozen semen. Who here has actually hunted with kin off of stud dogs live bred, and pups off of frozen semen from the same stud. Do they compare? There's been a ton of frozen semen used. How many semen pups have won big? I don't care about the breed. Laugh now I have blues , but this is not a breed specific thread. Have at it.

Tully,
The bottom line is that frozen semen pups are not any different than live cover pups....
I think the frozen semen pups may actually have an advantage because a guy is a whole lot less to back up a "brood bitch" to the insemination table than to a $250.00 stud fee.....
At best a pup gets only 50% of it's genetic potential from the sire....so if a good female is bred to frozen semen, regardless of how old it is, chances are that you are going to have good pups. The ratio of semen pups winning "big" isn't going to be any different than live cover pups....there are just way more live cover pups than AI pups, so the frequency of AI pups winning "big" is going to be less.
I have a buddy that is hunting a couple pups off frozen semen from a dog long since dead. And they are out of a pretty danged good female. I'll tell ya, they haven't made it to town as much as they should, but they are as nice a trio of young dogs out of the same litter as I've seen in YEARS AND YEARS.......
I'm a believer, but not because it is frozen semen, but because he was very careful in selecting the female to go with the frozen semen. Did a lot of research and tracked down the fellow that used to own the male......selective breeding is where it's at!

People have been using frozen semen to breed cattle with for decade. My ag instructor said he had the first artificial inseminated calf born in his area. People came from all over to see the calf and it looked.....a calf.

I agree with Oak Ridge. I did frozen semen (stud dog was still alive but I could not get my female to him and he was unable to get fresh semen to me) and I believe in the end it cost me roughly $1500... Oh and that's not including shipping of the semen or stud fee cost. How many people are going to spend $2000+ to breed a crap female? And if the male dog is dead, especially if he's been gone a while, the stud dog owner is not willing to breed crap females.
So really, I think they are usually better than other live covers because it is better selective breeding, rather than anyone that will pay the $____ stud fee and willing to bring their female over.
