late starting dog

i've read about late starting dogs and had one that had never been in the woods until she was 18 months old. she turned out to be my best dog ever. well now i've got a 14 month old english gyp that i raised from a puppy. i've taken he hunting many times. she went from doing nothing to hunting in just a little while. at first she just went into the woods a little ways and back out, then she went in a little farther, a few days ago she went every step of the way with my get gone kemmer cur and stayed with her. then last night she went out by herself and was wide open the whole time. i think it was a fox because she stayed with it a long ways and came back with out crying for help. i'm so encouraged. i was told she was well bred but just looking at her it was hard to see anything to like. she's short and has a kinked tail. with looks like that she had to start hunting or else.

I heard about a young pup that used to curl up and sleep in the woods when they took her hunting. She woke up treed her first coon by herself and turned out to be a dang nice dog.

Got a 2 year old redbone , he's been treeing with older dogs for 6-8 months, but doing it by his self he's not there yet. He is getting better each time!
He has treed a few possoms and couple of coons by his self.

he's getting there and that's what you want to see. good luck with your dog.

My lep male was a late starter. I raised him from a pup and would take him huntin' with the old dogs, etc. but it never really clicked with him until he was almost 2. He is now 4 and one of the most accurate dogs I've ever owned. A old coonhunter that had hunted and trained coon hounds all his life told me once that a dog that starts late will may times make the best dogs and be more accurate, and I believe it. I've seen it in more cases then just mine. Glad your gyp has flipped her switch.

i hope this will encourage those who have dogs that aren't showing much at a young age. Don't give up.

18years ago when I first got into coon hunting, a old timer that I got my first dog from, he always told me that if he's got a dog that wasn't treeing at a year old that he would sell or trade it!
So that's what I started doing, I look back I probley sold some dogs that might of made nice coondogs if I would of held on too them a little longer!
Now I keep them longer & give them some time!

i been lucky never had a hound that turn out to be able to tree a coon , now some of them took A LOT longer for them to figure out what i wanted them to do , but kept me slim alot of hours in the woods ,

I have handled pups for 30 years if the pup has been worked with I want them showing good interest by 1 yr old if showing nothing I cull em but it takes a lot longer than that to make a coon dog! I have only worked with Walkers some breeds may be slower.

In my opinion, there are dogs in every breed that take a while to get goin' and some that start and go at 5-6 months to a year. A lot of folks have the thought that pretty much all leps are slow starters and I guess that my first post on this thread justified them in their thinkin', but in my opinion the percentage of slow startin' leps is no higher than that of other breeds. Some folks don't mind a pup takin' a while to get started and others want them to start before or around 1 year, and no matter which way you like to go it's all good cause for the time bein' it's still America and we can have what we like. JMO

My first English female never left my sight in the woods until she was about 10 months old (which isn't that late..) and the first night she did she treed on a layup coon. The two older dogs she was with didn't tree on it so I didn't think she was treed at first....my buddy was the one that walked to her and shined the coon. I guess I learned my lesson on that haha. Now she is my number one dog and the coldest nosed dog I have hunted with.
