Puppies on the way
We usually give our females a 7 way booster 2 wks before due date.
Have some tums on hand to crush & dump in females mouth while she's in labor.
Have your vets # handy in case any complications arise a shot of potosin (probably didn't sp that right) on hand is a good idea in case labor slows to much.
I bring my female inside and watch closely while in labor and for a day or two after before I move to whelping box ,just to make sure each is nursing good & to watch for mastitis or other infection in female ...(a small plastic kiddy pool with a couple of old towels works great , when labor is done just toss out & put clean in) have small old hand towels or washcloths handy to wipe puppies off with and help clear sack off with if needed.
Also a good idea to have some goats milk just in case any have trouble.

And a snot sucker like they use on babies in case they take in fluid. Lots of clean dry towels and clean scissors. Good Luck. Hope you have a nice healthy litter with NO complications!!

I also give the momma dog a 7-way shot two weeks before due date ... and worm her again .
Make sure the whelping box has rails inside it so the momma can't squish the pups ... and while she's having them .. no bedding unless it's shorthair carpet ... even after that , I don't use stray or chips or anything ... it's just more the momma has to eat and it makes it harder for pups to learn to walk.
I think with hounds , you are better off to just let the momma alone to have them ... these are still performance animals that either start strong or are always weaklings .... high dollar pet breeds might need a delivery nurse , but not hounds.
What's the clean scissors for?My females due in 2 weeks also so this info is helpfull. My first litter.
You need snot sucker, thermometer ,esbilac and bottles with soft nipples ,have your vet or a vet on hold in case of problems, scissors and sewing thread to cut the cords and tie them off if your there and help her and if so get the pups out the sack ,suck out there mouth and nose and take a towel and rub hard until they start screaming and that's cleaning out there air way and lungs, unless you are familiar with oxytossin I wouldn't use it at all cause as good as it is if your not familiar with it and when to use it you can do more harm than good!!but you can also feed momma puppy chow with esbilac with some beef liver to keep her milk supply up!! And you know the dam and if you feel she is having problems do not hesistate to call vet and or take her in cause the longer you wait the more puppies you could possibly lose and or the dam aswell!!! Most people do not ever have problems but having these things on hand will save you in a pinch!! Her temp will drop within say 24 hours of delivery to about 99 degrees I will also supplement feed in between the pups with the esbilac with colestrium !!! The more you get in them the better off and the frost goal is getting them born the second is getting them to say 2 weeks and then along as her and the pups place is very clean then you should be in good shape unless something accident happens!! 571-233-5819 is my number if ii can assist you in anyway let me know !!
Thanks Potomac.
For the love of god people///// dogs have been giveing birth and raiseing pups for centurys without all this midwiffery.
About a week before the dog is due introduce her to the welping setup, a clean dry place with moderate Temp. and then leave her alone. When she goes into labor peek in once in awhile to make sure shes OK but dont interfear with the process let nature take its course. The more you but in with all this equipment and foolishness the greater the risk that she wont mother them properly.
dont even handle the pups for a few days if you can help it.

Yeh that's it I know some people that did that down south this summer and out of about 20 pups they only had 3 live that's what I would do!!! Lol I drove 1200 miles round trip plus all the other stuff I'm not to lazy to do everything possible to ensure that all will live that can!!! And out of 5 litters had to do 3 c,sections, and the last had to monitor with oxytosin!!! So with that careless theory I would have def lost 3 top coon treeing females and reproducers just because I wasn't prepared!!!that's stupid if you ask me!!!chances are she will be fine most are but it's nice to know the signs and have a double inexpensive items on hand incase you do need them!!!I had to learn the hard way on the second litter and lost 6 out of 11 pups cause I was trying to do it the old fashioned way and out of the five that did live I know 4 that are titled in both reg and the fifth is propably aswell cause she was doing it at 7 months old like the rest!!bottom line is propably will be fine but if not it usually happens in the middle of the night when there is nothing open!!,good luck oz of prevention is worth a pd of cure!!

Team Trouble
I'm with POTOMAC this most females have little or no trouble giving birth but with the price of stud fees & pups why take unnecessary chances you don't have to ! I have saved more than one female & pup over the years , that other wise would have not made it & glad I did the last pup I brought back from the brink is now a top hound . She was worth every min I lost sleep up bottle feeding. You all can let yours have pups under the back garden shed if you want but mine will be in a nice quite clean bathroom in a Kiddy pool & checked frequently for the 1st few days every time & given every chance @ survival.
Good luck with your up coming litter hope all goes well & you have 0 complications if you can't reach Potomac & have any questions feel free to give me a call # listed below. Jen

if you are 2wks out and don't know what you need the best advice I have seen on here is to have a clean, dry, warm whelping area and get her in there so she can adjust. you don't need and shouldn't give oxytocin if you don't know what your doing. do you know how many pups she has? oxy can kill your dog and pups if not given correctly. Being new to whelping pups I would suggest letting her do her thing as much as possible and if you need help or are not sure call your vet. Calling those that have given you their number for pointers may be a good thing but I would do it before she has pups. one first time scare can be the time between pups, could be a minute could be a few hours. Hope things go smooth. To me the first 72hrs is critical health wise. if they make it past there they are usually ok unless they get stepped on or smashed.

Don't know how many she's gonna have but she is getting huge!I have got 700 bucks in the breeding so it all goes smooth. When should her milk start comin in?
Usually you will start seeing milk a.couple days prior but she still is putting all she can into the pups so the milk development won't really peak until after there born!! But usually I chk a couple days prior-'and you will see a little, iher temp will drop to 99-100 within 24 hrs of having them I usually start putting mine in the whelping pen 7 days prior so they know what's what and after there temp drops I put them in it a d then just walk them to clean out and feed and water them !!more than likely you will be fine and as I said if you know your female and I'm sure you do she will let you know if something wrong!! Contrary to others I spend a lot of money when I make a cross I want thrum all to live and will do whatever I have to to see that it happens!!also watch your female everyone is different and some will get very possessive at first and might only let you near them!!just a note if you have young children!!571-233-5819

Start feeding the mom a good puppy feed now, and all the way until there 5-6 weeks old.
This is prolly a dumb question but here goes.when a female starts havin pups how quickly does the sack have to come off of them? Also temps nex week range from lows in the 50s and highs in the 70s.Will they be ok outside?thanks
quote:the mother will do what she need too do. As for the weather as long as thay got a dry place the mother will keep them warm.
