ANY ideas ?????

i have a pup thats 10-11 mths old , will go hunting on his own, and strike and run coons to the tree but doesnt want to tree... Ive tied him back and shot out coon and not let him touch them. Ive done this and let him to chew on them, ive hunted with dogs that tree good , hunted him alone, turned loose coons that he could see and couldnt see still not treeing ..

Any brilliant ideas out there that I havent thought of yet ????

Great mouth , great looks, great dispostion, just needs to be treeing...

It may just take time. Be patient, one thing is for sure you can't make him tree.

Will he tree on one hanging up? A hide or anything? I had one once. Wouldn't tree but do everything else. He was about 15 months. So I caught a coon. Was going to let him bark at it. He did and went plum crazy. Well somehow the cage came open. Coon comes out on 75# pups head. They wrassle around a couple min. Coon runs up tree. Pup goes over sniffs tree. Sits down and looks up. He left the next day

Only you can decide when its time to move on. I learned long ago that life is to short to waste alot of time on one that doesnt have all the tools. No one can make a dog that doesnt have the instinct to get treed a treedog.

John, you hit the nail on the head... I think im going to hang on to him a couple months but then someone else will get to try .

I'd give him a little while longer , seen them go from not treeing to like you flipped a switch. I guess you can look on the bright side , he's not a tree picking idiot. Usually it's guys trying to get there dog to go on & actually have a coon.

this one might be a hair far streched, but it helped my male that was around the same age...

showed him a caged coon, and showed him that when the track goes up the tree, so did the coon. one time and he started treeing, but it may not help yours but a thought...

This works for me from time to time. The next coon you plan to put down, tie this pup on the same side of the tree where the coon falls but far enough off to the side that the pup cannot quite reach the coon. When the coon hits the ground, hopefully that pup will start going nuts. While the pup is going nuts, pick the coon up and hang it in the tree the pup is tied to. If that is not feasible, hang the coon in the next closest tree, but it has to be VERY close to where you had the pup tied. Hopefully the pup will continue to go nuts, and if he does, turn him loose and let him crawl up on the tree and blow the top out for 30 seconds to one minute before you push it out and let him have hold of it. After you let him have hold of it you can then pet the hair off him. after 3 or 4 of these type exercises you can then evaluate how much time you want to put in him, based upon how much Improvement you are seeing.

The key to this is keeping his intensity up while you are hanging the coon.

Good Luck

I had one one time that wouldn't open on track or bark treed, he would sit on his butt under the tree looking up with a coon every time. Only way I found him was with the Garmin. He eventually come out of it, and the young boy who has him has the dog looking good!

Posted by amazingcursouth on 09-19-2013 11:47 PM:

i have seen this happen in dogs that were showed lots of caged game as a young pup. lay him up and don't show him any more game and don't turn coon loose in front of him. If a dog don't tree it doesn't get game shot out to him. I messed a nice little squirrel dog up by shooting game out that it did not tree.

I own clacks ton half sister and she was the slowest maturing pup I have ever raised and as with yours I saw all the tools that a top hound needed and most would have moved her on and I also thought about it more than once and I even bred her and that worked and helped mature her or the time was a help either or she is just coming two but she is turning into one anybody would love to own!!!! She is 100% loner born that way ,I have only shined two trees in her life that didn't see either a coon or she did tree a handful of opossums aswell but the two trees were big bushy and knowing her I would bet the ranch they were there aswell!!! So if you see those traits are in him you might want to set him up work on another and chk him out in another 60 days and if not set him up again!!! If he is like mine and you move him you will be sorry !!!!! Don't want you to kick yourself down the road for being impatient!! JmoAnd I also have talked to a couple people that owned pups out of Shea and a lot didn't do anything until they were two years old!!

Posted by Keepin-um-Treed on 09-20-2013 06:41 AM:

I talked to a guy that had a 19 month old walker male that if you shot a coon out he wld not tree for a couple days to a week. If you didn't shoot any he wld treed his heart out. Just a thought never heard of anything like that ordeal
