-- How far have you had to travel on a cast (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928338343)

Posted by Gabe Webb on 09-16-2013 03:11 PM:

Does the UKC have a limit on the distance from the club a cast can go to hunt?

Is there a driving distance from a club that is established through the UKC and the club on distance that hunters should travel on a cast? Friday night I had to travel 117 miles one way and Saturday night went 110 one way. There were a couple casts that went further than I did. Seems to me if a club puts on a zone they should have enough guides to cover for alot shorter distances. Its not like we were in a metropolis and had to go hours outside the city. Seems like one time years ago there was a 70 mile radius from a club a cast could go?

It is hard to imagine that back in the day, the Old ACHA World Hunt would put over 500 dogs in the woods on a single night. That was with non hunting guides and non hunting judges. I look back at that now and wonder "howd they do that". Today, for most clubs the focus is on hunting guides first. My bet is you had a hunting guide both nights. Hunting guides are the saviors of a coon club now. Without them there would be none.

It was ridiculous. I KNOW of 2 people that wanted to guide within 50 miles that they didn't let guide.

Had same thing happen to me at bigger hunt in the end of February in NC.

We drove well over 2 hours..come to find out another guy in our cast told us that when he pre-entered he put down as a guide and his spots were less than30 miles away..it comes down to who you know, and this is the main reason why I won't go back to that hunt.

drove 132 miles one way at AO one year and that was just to the club to get my guide. That is why I won't hunt AO again. I have been back but no to hunt.

I went to a club hunt the weekend before Autumn Oaks and they sent my cast an hour and 45 minutes away... Needless to say we withdrew as it wasn't worth driving that far then back home 30 minutes for a club hunt. There were 2 guides wiling to guide within 20 minutes of club but guy guiding insisted on guiding... Ended up winning to...

Just wondering

Is this U K C fault or the master of hounds at the local club. Meaning is he in charge of the hunt? does he or does he not assign guides to each cast? If there are 4 people who want to guide on the same cast who gets to guide?. simple I think MOH not U K C . Just my opinion though.

H.L. I think you are right if its a local hunt. It would be the MOH. But if your talking about a large hunt like AO, Winter Classic then UKC should be the one to step in and say look were not sending cast a 100 miles away. UKC should know who the satellite clubs and how far away they are. Plus once you get to the satellite club you still have to get your guide and drive again.

Distance

In my original post I was asking about, does anyone know if the UKC has a set limit on the miles a cast should travel on a given hunt or within a few miles give or take. Is there a standard that the UKC has for the MOH or field rep. to go by or is it simply up to his discretion. If people were wanting to guide to the shortest places then why weren't given the nod over the further distances?

No set limit.

I have been master of hounds at local clubs and have to send casts an hour and a half to hunt because nobody wanted to guide. There were several people who lived within 30 minutes of the club but when asked to guide, they said they didn't have anywhere to hunt. As far as deciding who guides, the way I do it is club members first and then if I don't have enough, I go by who is the closest to fill out the guides.

WINTER CLASSIC 2012
I drove 1 1/2 hrs to satellite club and then 2 hrs to south of Tallahassee to a wildlife forrest on the gulf of Mexico. BS

Autumn Oaks 2012
Drew off the fairgrounds and drove 3 hrs to the Michigan border
BS

I know what you mean about zone 8 this year and having to drive. There where alot closer hunting grounds. UKC needs to start fining or barring folks and this crap will stop.

What I've seen many times is the "GUIDE" lies to the MOH about how far it is to where they will hunt.

The 2 hour drive at SETW days may have been one I know about. The hunter who could have guided :30 minutes fro the fair grounds had lots of coon and great hunting. The problem was a conflict between the hunter and "THE POWERS THAT BE" at the hunt, and I don't believe it's the hunters fault.

It's one of my biggest pet peaves and one reason I have backed way off some of the bigger hunts. Many times I've traveled to 2 hours+ to hunt and in my opinion that is not reasonable.

I don't know where the fault lies but it is a big problem.

Drove 2 hours an 45 min on sat night at autumn oaks in 2006.

drove almost a hour one night to hunt 10 minutes from club house man did I get screwed that night first and first 225 minus that quick well hunting guide 50 minus after I got home I figured it out we rode a hour so his buddy could lay a drag to a slick tree I should have figured it out as dog was striking on leash at truck

You mention the old ACHA World. I drove 225 miles one way in 1978.

Year before last when the zone was held in Elizabethtown, I had to drive up deep into Indiana the first night and just 60 miles away from Cincinnati the second night and still not but two coons found both nights. That is why I hope since the WH is in Elizabethtown coons can be hunted a little closer, especially since the winners have to hunt twice the first night. My thought on the subject is why host an event if you have to send people over 100 miles to hunt? If they are not closer, don't put people out just to say you are sponsoring a big event. Dogs get worn out riding for hours. That is another sore spot for me when a cast rides for a very long time to a hunting guides house for him to get his dog off the chain or out of the kennel all fresh to go up against tired dogs and handlers. Hope this is not the case at the WH this year!

Sometimes I wonder when we have to drive a long ways at hunts if the guide has plenty of coons close but they want a buddy to go there so he can win the hunt

I am not so concerned with distance traveled as much as I am making the return deadline. In this day and age and the costs associated with the sport, I continue to be amazed at those who feel an early deadline is warranted.
