hound eating her puppies?

Walked back to check on her and as the puppies were being birthed she was eating them. Why? She had two litters before this one without any issues.

Crap that sucks. that's all i can say cause i have no idea why she would eat them.

I have no idea why they do this but if you want to, snatch them up as they come out, clean them off n bottle feed them.

A buddy of mine just had his female kill them all at three weeks old for no apparent reason. If she was mine I would spay her for a coon dog or cull her.

Posted by umbie on 08-15-2013 06:40 PM:

She is doing it because either she is not gonna survive or something is wrong with the pups and she knows it. Nature takes care of it without the pups suffering. I had a dog do this once and I took the last pup away and bottle fed it . It still died a few weeks later . The mom died an hour after her last pup .

Our last litter 2 times the mom tried to eat the same pup shortly after they were born. We happened to be there when this was going on. We took that pup away for about an hour and put him back in with the rest and it lived. Funny thing is, that same pup got hit by a car when it was 5 months old.

eating puppies

I do not believe the pups were sick and she knew they were not going to live. I believe if you feed a higher quality dog food or added the right kind of feed supplement . the puppies would have been just fine. I think a calcium and phosphrous based supplement would have prevented this. My grandpa used to feed STEAM BONE MEAL to his sows to prevent them from eating their pigs. The same principle should apply to a dog.

She could be low on Iron. Take her to vet check Iron levels and get her an Iron shot.

100% NOT TRUE I had a bitch eat a litter one time and she raise 13 pups the next litter no problems at all. Vet told me no one knows why this happens occasionally. His guess is something is wrong with the pups but he admits its only a guess.

All are gone, just as fast as they were coming out she was eating them. By far a nasty site to see. Tried a few things but she was hell bent on getting them gone. She had 2 litters before this one, same whelping box, same everything except the stud. Has nothing to do with dog food, she eats better than most people. Has me so confused because she is the sweetest dog I ever owned and is for sure a coondog.

I had the same problem with one of my chesapeakes, I gave her a can of dog food twice a day along with her dry food for 3 or 4 days after having pups. seemed to stop the problem.

feed your female plenty of raw hamburger meat or most any kind of raw meat will do.I had a leopard cur a few yrs. back that ate all of one litter.someone told me to feed the hamburger meat & I did & she never ate another pup.seems there is something missing in most all brands of dog food that they need. raw meat seems to fill that need.good luck.
my experience has been if there is something wrong with a pup
the gyp will reject said pup by pushing or mouthing it away from her & the other pups to let the pup die

I had this happen with a litter before and I often wondered if she would have raised the next litter fine. I have a Gr Nite female now that had eleven pups. She has smashed all but four. If those four die she will join them. I can't stand sorry moms either human or dogs.

listen to this guy he is 110% correct

Posted by joey on 08-16-2013 09:49 PM:

It doesn’t have anything to do with food or iron. She has a hormonal imbalance. It does not happen every time so people try something and the next litter they don’t eat them. So they figure that fixed it. The whole time it was her hormones and they were ok the second time around. I have seen them kill them trying to hide them also but they didn’t eat them because of it. She might eat every pup she has from now on or she might not. It will be up to you to decide if it’s worth the chance.
