Question About YEP Events

Regarding the YEP events: I understand that the classes held during the daytime are for the kids, only.

What about the actual activities, such as bench show, field trial, water race, & actual nite hunt; are they also for kids, only ?

If a kid doesn't own his or her own coonhound, are they allowed to borrow someone else's dog so they can participate, or are they only able to participate with their own dog, or a dog owned by their family ?

Just curious as to how the YEP events are working out...

I hope they have a LOT of youth participation !!

Yes the events are for the kids only and if im not mistaken they must sit in the class to be able to enter. They do not have to own a dog they can use any dog they want and I highly encourage anyone with a yep event nearby to load the kids and dogs and go help out take as many kids as possible as they are the future of our sport

Yep cards are much easier to get now

When YEP started out, it required several hours of class time. The first couple years, our club had 3 evenings and then a Saturday afternoon class followed by taking them out on simulated cast and had them keep score by the dogs actions. It was hard to get everyone signed up, because for some reason or another almost everyone missed one of the classes. Then the classes were downsized to eliminate the problem and most clubs have a short class before the actual event, so everyone can participate. The card is good for one year at any other YEP event. We have a couple guys that bring dogs for the water race and let the youths handle the dogs. It is a win-win deal. The kids get to handle a dog that will actually jump in and swim and the owner gets the points.

Thanks to both of you for your responses. The YEP program sounds very interesting; I think every club should try to put on some of these events. The kids really ARE the future of both the sport of hunting, and the breeding of hounds - both of which also directly affect the UKC.

From what I understand, kids are being indoctrinated with Animal Rights propaganda (including HSUS coloring books !!) all through elementary school. That's a lot of propaganda to alter the thought process of young minds...and it has now been going on for over 20 years. No wonder we have so many kids today that have no interest in even going outside, or fishing, or even riding a horse or camping. They are glued to technology and show no interest in nature. They don't even care to own a pet !!

Just think, if each kid that attends a YEP event would just bring along one of their neighborhood friends, and both could participate in the events. I hope these YEP events really catch on...
