Puppy Umbilical Hernia

What do you guys think? I have a puppy with an Umbilical Hernia the vet wants me to spay her also when I fix it. Is that necessary? They said its genetic and she could pass it on. Would it be fine to just fix the Hernia and not spay

it is fine just to fix it in my opinion. i use hounds to hunt and never had any functionality issues with them hunting or having puppies that had a umbilical hernia. this is just my opinion and it could be wrong, but that is waht i have perssonally experiecned

Im gonna have to say that's a crock of s***. iv always been taught that an umbilical hernia was caused by the mama dog nipping the umbilical cord to close in to the belly. doesn't leave enough material to heal right so when the pup gets up and moving good you get the hernia. No need to spay for that. i highly doubt its genetic. some vets will say anything to get people to spay. id go to another vet.

I've always been told that its because the momma yanks on the cord some when she cuts it. I has nothing to do with genetics. My pup had a small one when he was younger and the vet said most disappear by 6 months. She had me wait until then and when the time came, she said it was small enough she wouldn't worry about it. Never mentioned spaying him because he's a hunting dog and the possibility of breeding him was there. Some vets are for the money and some look out for the dogs. Just gotta find the right one.

I always heard it is caused by the female pulling on the cord before its ready to be pulled. If its soft it will heal up on its own usually. Its not genetic.

THE HEREDITY THING IS WHAT THEY PREACH TO TRY AND GET YOU TO SPAY OR NEUTER YOUR HOUND. I ASKED THE VET THE OTHER DAY, WHATS GONNA HAPPEN WHEN EVERYTHING IS SPAYED OR NEUTERED, KINDA WORKIN YOURSELF OUT OF A JOB. WE NEED MORE PETA AND ASPCA MISREPRESENTATION. <v>

Life's short so get off the couch and either drop the tailgate and tree some coon or sit back on the bank and do some fishing!

Find a new vet.depend on the size of it and age of pup it may heal on its own.if its small push it in Every chance you get.have a four month old here now that I did that to.can't even tell she had one.

that's right on there just massage it back in every chance you get and when the get up moving around good the belly muscles will tighten up and they usually stay . my vet also told me to wait till they are 5 to 6 months old before even thinking on fixing the hernia .and never once mentioned spaying or neutering a dog due to hernia .

Well I talked to about 4 vets today and they all mentioned spaying her and I told them that was not going to happen but they all wanted to wait until she was atleast 4 months old to even do the operation on the hernia.. So I'm going to wait and she if she can grow out of it then because it seems like everyone has the same opinion that its caused by the mother pulling on it

I work for a vet.

In their defense, they aren't telling you to spay because they don't like your dog or you. They just don't understand the responsible coon hunter. We have to euthanize strays all the time due to sickness. They don't like doing it anymore then anyone else.
Some folks need to be told to spay their dogs. There are A LOT of irresponsible dog owners out there.

Good luck with her. It might close on its own. If not, its an easy surgery.

I have a female who has it and she is going on 7 now and has had 3 litters of puppies and never a problem. My vet told me that no bigger than it was and that RARELY do they cause the dog problems. So I just let it be, it has never gotten any bigger and she hunts just as hard and never had any problems with carrying pups.

I have had pups with Umbilical Hernias and they healed up before a year old. I would wait and see if it heals

i have a 4 yr old plott gyp that's got a nice sized hernia. i have only female dogs and all are spayed by her. i'm going to spay her and get the hernia fixed at the same time. i spay my females becausse i don't want to worry about one getting knocked up. i'm not a breeder. when i want a puppy i find a breeder and buy one. i too think too many people breed without due regard for the breed but think more about what's handy and conviniance. not everyone but many do.

Hernia's are hereditary. I'd say about one in a hundred are caused by mothers being too rough. I have a female who has a small hernia, and has had pups in all her litters that have had hernias. One was born by c-section and I personally delivered the pup and cut it's cord. Had nothing to do with the momma. It's a genetic defect, and if they are big hernia's the female should be spayed. Even breeding a dog with a small hernia shouldn't be done. Because each generation it gets worse. Eventually you will see pups with hernia's that are life threatning... I am mindful of this in my breeding program, and though I bred my old bitch, all of the resulting pups with hernia's have been spay/neutered.

while SOMETIMES inherited, hernia's are more often caused by infection at the umbilical site. the difference is rather the muscles in the belly are involved (translate into intestine being under the skin instead of behind the muscle)

those caused by minor infections are NOT inherited and are easy to fix, those that involve the stomach muscles are usualy genetic.


vets as a rule are inclined to just group them all into genetic based, because of the legal risk if they sign off on a health certificate.

in 25yrs never saw a hernia that was genetic based in coondogs. not that there hasn't been a case, but I just never saw one myself. all were infection based.
