Did you ever

Just wanted to see if anyone ever had a pup that hunted out slow at a young age but once it got older would throw dirt in your face to go hunting? I've never had a throw dirt kinda dog so just wanted to see what they hunted like at a young age. Thanks for any input.

Sure, most young dogs that I have had start out like that. The big difference is, I start hunting a young dog alone as soon as I see them split tree or when there really doing good with other dogs. So a lot of time thats at an early age(under a year). I expect them to not hunt hard. I will walk hunt them, then when they start treeinig coons consistently like this I will pull up to a spot and let them out and I sit on the tailgate and now its time for them to go on there own. They usually catch on pretty quick. Ihunt by myself with one dog probably 80-90% of the time.

Yeah , it takes a little time ... make alot of dumps each night sending them ... sometimes you gotta enourage em'.

Just be careful about re-sending them too much or if they have made an honest effort ... they may go back in and think you want them to tree a possum they ignored , or start laying out on you because that don't get them whipped ... or get skiddish coming in.

A big part of a big hunting dog is them learning to use their nose and experience to fall in the country and get struck ... going deeper comes with having the confidence in themselves that they will find a coon.... unless it's a crazy Walker dog , lol
