Opinions on Breeding

How about we start another topic on breeding. For you experienced breeders.

Breeders for Competition hunting. What determines if you should or should not breed a particular female. I know none or very few are perfect so what faults or holes should a person allow? How do you decide what faults are genetic or man made? and will they show up in the pups? What bad traits can be fixed with the sire?

I know it would be a lot easier if a person had hunted several of the ancestors, but for those who haven't like myself could use suggestions.

None....If the female has a bad trait, then don't breed her. You are just passing that trait on down the line. It will combine with any bad trait that the sire has.

I guess the "bad traits" that you alluded to in your first question. "In my opinion"...low mouth, silent, too mean, no hunt, all track and no tree, too slow to get treed, too fast to get treed, too independant (refusal to hunt or tree with another dog), won't stay treed are a few. I guess "too" much of anything is a bad trait. It depends on the owner/handler how much is "too" much. It is easy to see why there is no perfect female but there are some that are very good. In my humble opinion (I have been told that I am not really that humble), pick a female that you are very happy with and that has no traits that you can't live with. Then breed her to a stud that has all of the traits that "you" are looking for in a hound. Don't try to fix a bad trait in a female by breeding her to a stud that does not have this trait. Now, that is just my opinion and how I look at it now. I used to try to "fix" bad traits but found out in my experience that it didn't work so I quit breeding for a while. Now I am doing it different. I think that you have to get that "good" female and breed her back to where those good traits came from.
