Question: Showing a Female In Heat

Just clarifying. What is considered "In Season" when entering a female in a Bench Show?

Starting to swell? Showing blood? What?

I take it as the whole time a female is in season...

Granted some females it is hard to see with the naked eye if they are in season and yes people show them when they maybe shoulent as they are coming in or as they are going out but I would look for the over swelling and bleeding...

a dog's nose is very powerful. if a female is in season but not noticeable to the human eye, but is a distraction to the male dog, then the "ethical" thing to do in not show the dog. with that being said, it is allowed in the conformation ring. but we are discussing bench shows and dogs in season are not allowed. there are all sorts of tricks to mask it.

beware of the female that will stay large and look like they are in season even when they are not...months later.

Cynthia is rite bout the swellin an being out we have a female that swells bad a month b4 an a month after even tho she is not in we have had judges say sumthng bout it! But I wood not show her if she was n she jus swells bad even win she isn't!

I do the 'smear' test with my thumb. If I think a dog is coming in or going out, I ask them when they were in heat last or if their dog is due in heat. I know a few times I have caught it before the owners knew. If they aren't swollen huge and no blood, I go on like usual, if blood or huge, hard swollen etc. No win. I have even had to ask a person to rmove their dog from the bench because she was in heat and the males were going nuts. How can you not tell that???

One of mine has been through her first heat this spring. She's been out for well over a month. Her backside is still swollen too. I hope that will resolve itself and pose no issues in the future as well!

Gracie is naturally big and have had the looks a few times like is she in heat and even been asked...

Trust me you cant hide here when she is in lol...

Some females look swollen for a while.. look for some discharge cleo and make sure she doesnt have any infection it does happen as I have had it with Gracei about 3 years or so ago we had to do antis to clear it up finally and she went down...

if you feel lucky, then you can take that chance. but that's your call. you are playing with fire. when you break the rules, there will come a day when you have to pay the piper. and if you do, you know its unethical to do it, so what kind of message is that teaching the next generation???
