Do you think the entry fee for most ukcSmall club Hunts is too high?
ENTRY FEES

OF HUNTING FOR YOUR KIDS!!!
It seems there is a significant number of entries out there that want something for their win other than a win slip. I think this is true especially amongst the youngsters, they want a plaque or trophy. Others like myself are there for nothing much more than the competition and that win slip. Expectations are not the same at every club or in all areas of the country. The best you can do is try to get a handle on what your patrons want and try to give it to them.

One things for sure, when it comes to kids, entry fees are a big part of who comes and who don't.
We have a nearby local club who's membership is about 95% Amish. Their UKC hunts will be atleast 50% kids and teens. But what is significant is that their club hunts draw larger entries than their UKC hunts do and the club hunts are prolly closer to 75% youths. $5 entry verses $20 entry. I also noticed things seem to get alot more heated at the club hunts than at the UKC hunts. You get four 12 year old Amish boys on a cast, you best forget the judge and just make sure you got a good referee.

The last dog I made Grand I never received a trophy from all 8 wins. However the entry was $20 or better at all of them. I never cared I was getting win slips and performance points the whole time, but when I was young I wanted those trophies.

We charge 20 but give away trophy's or a cap or shirt. Your pick. If I plan on hunting one. I don't even look at the entry fee amount. Could be 50 for all I care.

Our club charges 20 but they give out tickets for each entry and take 5 out of each entry for a drawing that someone wins. So at each hunt someone has the chance to win their entry fee and gas money back. Works out great, althought I have yet to win it lol

We try to keep the cost down. Our Poor Boy Hunts are only $10.00, and our regular hunts $15.00.

Definently not a cheap hobby....with gas and entry fee I figure on 75$ a hunt give or take...I hit most clubs with an hour and a half or so if I am pushing one...end up with 150-200mi on the truck and 15-20$ entry fee...
Funny some clubs are poor boys at 15$...some aren't...
Heck a RQE this year had 3 plaques and 7 trophy's...first time I've seen that...
I don't care much for trophy's and plaques...bigger events I kind of "expect" them..regular hunts I'd be fine if they did away with them or kept them just for firsts and lowered the entry fee 5-10$...these days every little bit could help....
Lack of youth could just be the new trend....most kids anymore aren't hunting and fishing etc...sad to see...not sure what the future holds for hunters/trappers...seems most all states are declining in hunter numbers..

I think 20$ is a bit high jus for a regular hunt if it a sectional or sumthng big it OK but I agree wit u a lot of kids an sum older ppl can't really afford it! Like 2nite we having a htx hunt our fee is 8.00$ I think that's reasonable!
Our club has both trophy/plaque hunt and poor boy events.
The trophy hunts provide a plaque to the winners, and we charge $15 show and $20 hunt. We could go cheaper with the plaque/trophy but if we charge $20 we feel the winner needs to be proud of the award.
The poor boy hunts are our Friday events; we charge $10 show and $15 hunt. We typically give away some small gift to winners; stuff like dog treats, 4 pk alkaline batteries, and small bags of dog food.
Plaques costs have gone up, so has the light bill, county taxes, and the UKC fee. I want young people to enjoy our sport, but if the club loses financially they won't have a place to come to hunt out of, clubs need to find the correct balance and for each club that may be slightly different. One thing clubs can do to keep costs down is to find an alternative to raising entry fees; raffles, 50/50 raffles, and requesting donations for prizes from local businesses might offset expenses...

Yeah don't many think about operating costs. It costs to run a club. Its not like most are making any money. We try to end every year with just enough for a yrs worth of rent and usually that's about what we have. Still have the yrs powerbill and upkeep to make up and some MOH charge to do it. I know it may hurt yall but you can think like this. Think about how much it costs to run em and think about if none were around anymore. If ours gets to where it can't make enough to stay open. Are any of yall gonna donate money yearly to keep it open?

You are right about operating costs, we have to have 15 dogs in the hunt at $20 to break even. We have a hunt tomorrow night, the trophies alone costs $256, the food will be over $100, and the master of hounds costs $100, so that is $456 we have invested before the 1st dog is entered.
you could have a 20 dollar entry for adults and drop to 15 for youth. Give out trophy to youth winner only. long as UKC gets their cut it doesn't matter what you charge.

It matters to the people though. Read this thread. You charge 20 and don't give nothing away. You wanna hear some crying. You will. Funny to me really. I just listen though lol.

Just remember its going to a good cause and I will pay it to help it keep going for our young hunters. maybe ukc could do a points program on how many entry fees you pay for in year and give back that way, but remember everything comes at a cost and in today's world things ain't cheap!

I tell ya one thing that helped us is we make our own trophies. We order all the stuff and we will have a trophy day and build for about 4 to 5 hunts at a time. You save a lot of money by doing that.
Most clubs are having trouble paying the bills..Entry fees are 90% of there income...Back when I first started in the hunts we would have 100 plus dogs at every hunt..Now most hunts are lucky to get 25 in the hunt...The way I feel about the cost today. It hurts most guys with familys...You could spend $50 easy at just a local hunt...The lower fees do not bring more dogs to the hunts....Most clubs in my area quit giving out trophys a few years ago. To keep cost down in the smaller hunts..Trophys we got cost about $250 a few years ago..So a club could save about $1000 or more a yr....
