What age...
What age would be good to start using the garmin alpha for training...?

It would depend on several different factors.
1. What level of training?
2. Is the dog already obedience trained? Will it load and heel?
3. What is the nature of the dog? Is the dog bold or mild mannered? Not all dog's respond to the stimulus in the same manner.
4. Do you plan on conditioning the dog to the collar?
I typically wait until I start actually hunting the dog. Yes, that age varies. I never use an e-collar on a dog that does not already know and respond to verbal commands. I condition the dog to the e-collar at home in the yard before a dog wears it hunting. Conditioning lets me know what levels to use.
