I’m I being to serious?
I was sitting at a hunt the other day talking to a man and he said almost all the pups he raises make it. I thought I must really be doing something wrong because I have 1 out of 20 make it. Then I realized by talking to him that as long as they run and treed he is happy with them. That’s not me at all, I analyze about everything my dog does and I have walked away from hunts where my dog treed 5 coons disappointed because it was sloppy work. I’m I alone on this? It made me realize why I can hunt against a dog in a hunt and it look absolutely like junk but tree one coon and the owner is tickled to death. Don’t get me wrong I have a great time and enjoy hunting but I’m not that easy to please. I’m I being to serious?

LOL.Heck no.Im the same way man.If im gonna go walk 2 miles and lose sleep i want to see some style. It takes some good dog work to impress me.Weather the dog trees 2 or 10 a night to me its how they do it.The last two ive started ended up bein consistant coondogs but each had there own minor faults so im bracin myself for a real dud.
90% of it is how it's started and trained . But I do agree out of a dozen pups only 1 of them will suit me if that . Doesn't make the ones I didn't keep duds , but my standards they where culled. Usually if they haven't been culled from breathing air at my house lol they usually will probably make a decent dog but I think a few of us are done spending 2 yrs on a pup that we know will be common . We are looking for greatness and will cull average

I have started 14 in the last 7 years and all would tree coon but none are eating my food today because mostly lack of heart ,no drive and or mouth those have been main problems with the pups I started and they were all from so called top crosses !!! But now last year I started 2 figuring that they wouldn't cut the mustard just like all the rest and I booked 2 more from again well known crosses and at this time I like everyone of them they go hard ,big mouths and now I have another problem I can't decide which 2 I want to keep and push and I am trying like he'll to keep them hunted but I am the only one paying the price now!! Lol and I am pretty hard to please so I understand exactly what you are saying but be careful what you wish for cause you just might get it!!!!and I am in pretty thin coon and rough country for pups!!!!!And I might entertain partnering on a couple if the right people would come along cause as I said I like all 4 and they are all. To the point they just need a ride and hunted alone!!!!

I've started a bunch in the last 15yrs. Ones still here. She's 11. Every single one of them wound up being able to tree Coon. Most had something I like. All had something I hated. That's why they all gone. I've had em hunt to hard and far. To close. Mean ones. Tree jackers. Tree leavers. Tree climber.Face barkers. Covering me to idiots. Dead loners lol. Had it all. Id like to take parts and add them up for one good one. What got 2 of the better ones and they were extremely independent. Was lack of go. I mean they'd hunt their hearts out. Just not over a couple hundred yards. That don't work here.

Seems like I'm always thinking something like they should have located faster, or I wish they was a better tree dog, or I wish they didn't grub sometimes on a track, or they should have went on, or WHAT THE HECK IS THAT STUPID DOG DOING, or gosh I wish they would shut up, or why didn't they do that in the first place, or MY FAVORITE: I must be crazy to hunt as much as I do, and have to pack around these sorry useless hounds. Sometimes I get so MAD at my dogs that I want to SHOOT them and just quit all together, but the next night I'm back at it, LOL.
My hounds aren't world beaters but I'm blessed to have them and to even be able to go hunting but they do, do there job (MOST OF THE TIME ANYWAYS), still yet; I'm always wanting, and looking for something better, and I don't think there is nothing wrong with that. We all have different expectations, thoughts, and opinions on what we like in a dog and what we believe is a TRUE COON-HOUND, so it's hard to judge who's right and who's wrong, as it's a matter of opinion. What you may think is a world beater, I may want to kill. Wanting or looking for perfection or greatness is not a bad thing, it just shows you have a passion for what you are doing. We just got to keep in mind that THEY ARE JUST DOGS, and it's all for FUN!!

My old rat dog suits me most nights, and i always have a young one that i have high hopes of becoming special. The search for that great one keeps us going to the woods and after you draw out with some dogs with big reputations you realize that at the end of the day they are just dogs and they all have a hole or two other than the one under their tail.

I will say this though . In the past couple years I've drawn some bigger winning dogs . At the end of the day they where all sink deep and ambush a coon . None of them trailed much or did alot of dog work in front of us . You know why this dog is popular? Easy to train Or make . Those type usually hunt for those good easy tracks and if they have enough drive they can usually be made into a winner . As far as a dog that will strike a bad track and tree it closer .. You don't see those too often ... Because they are too hard of work to make . People are breeding for the first dog I mentioned . They will look better in a nite hunt at a younger age and usually finish quicker .... But not better . And IMO that type of pup or dog is average when it's all said and done but hang a little chrome on them and a monster mouth and most people think its the best thing on 4 legs

Pretty good Dwils....I agree.
Its no secret, making a coondog takes bootleather, a leash , and a .22.
Most of us only have enough of what it takes to do it right to make a dog or two.....If were lucky.

Dwils id say ur right.I cant stand it when I see coons sittin up and a dog cant tree them or just flat out run by them.To eat my feed they better be able to tree layups and work a cold track.Thats were balanced hounds show there skills.
I just find myself getting disappointed sometimes and I'm toting a dog that can get it done right. I hear it all the time deep and lonely with a coon. 25 and 100 beats the wood monster every time bla bla bla. I want mine 100 and 100 right beside me with a coon! As Daniel was saying I see a lot of guys hunting dogs that you cut them and it is a repeat every time 1/2 to a mile deep and have a coon most of the time. Very little trailing and have a coon. Ya they win for sure but they are hot nosed and looking for an easy one. I see that as a fault and move that kind down the road. I guess I'm just picky I know that kind wins and I love a winner but I have to hunt that pile through the week too.

I've been as guilty as anyone is about deep and lonely. In a hunt , nothing makes ya get a rush like walking into a tree that three dogs are on and treeing mine split way in a piece . Pulling the other three off their tree and having one just rockin on the wood deep. I've said this once and ill say it again ... I've owned both and I always go back to the dog that starts hunting the minute it's in the woods and looks for a track . They are harder to make but after a couple seasons they will develop a NACK for treeing those tough coon and make them look just as easy as hot coon(if they have any brains). I've got the Fred bear dog in my kennel that personally just goes to hard . If he's not hunted down he will shoot past a coon or two has enough hunt for 3 dogs . When hunted down he doesn't so much and will tree them close; nice dog . I'm just crytical of my own hounds . But also have an 11 month old off Bear that has treed 40 singles alone now and hasn't got much over 300 yards to tree any of them . Finds them close . This is hunting the same woods I do any finished dog . Alot more hassle but will finish into the better dog I believe .
I consider myself pretty fortunate to have owned a couple nice dogs but am always looking for greatness . And when you hunt with greatness . You will know it! I think that's the difference between the average trainer and the serious one . The average trainer doesn't look or nit pick faults in dogs or even look for them . The serious trainer anylyzes everything

Exactley dwells people ask why I do what I do and I tell them I analyze very track my dogs run and try to figure what where and why everything that happens of course I told them I might be wrong eveytime. I do this but it makes me feels better about answering my own questions!! Lol now I cantell them I am serious trainer lol they say I'm addicted I'm not sure what I am but I do feel everything happens for a reason"""""!!!!!

Joey,
Who should care? I don't believe a man should impose his beliefs on another. Do you enjoy it? Then that should be all that matters.
This game is more of a hobby for me. I probably don't take it as serious as many, but it is what it is. I enjoy myself.
Who cares what Billie Bobbie Ray thinks???

Odds are pretty good that followin hounds isnt going to make a guy rich or famous, that doesnt leave much except enjoyment. As soon as you let your dogs performance determin wheather or not you enjoy being in the woods your days in the sport are probably numbered. I have seen lots of guys come and go through the years, some just loose interest or life takes them in a different direction, but a fair number just burn out because they forgot why they started and became frustrated and dissapointed every time their dog had a bad night, and they all look like idiots from time to time.
We look for balance in a hound, its just as important in the hunter.

Ya I know I'm trying to take a different approach. I'll always be demanding of my dogs I just have to remember there is more. I have seen a lot of people come and go. I have seen a bunch of them quit or take a break for some years. I have never let up since I started 27 years ago, and I don’t have any plans to now. It might just be time for a new dog. I enjoy this one but it’s the same thing every night. I normally hunt one 5-6 years before I worry much about a new one. This one is 4, we are fixing to shoot for a truck ticket and she needs $16 more to be qualified for the nationals. I think I'll start really looking for a young dog.
