Poll: Ground Catches???
What is everyone's opinion of coonhounds catching coon on the ground, good, bad, or don't care? I have seen this subject come up on several threads and forums as of late, and I noticed that my opinion is way different than a lot of other people's. Just wanted to hear the coonhound community's general consensus.

I like a dog that runs to catch and catches them on the ground with consistency but I would rather they tree. Its saves on vet bills.

I see it happen maybe 3 times a year, not enough to think about it one way or another. I'd much rather have my dog tree one that catch it simply because strike points plus tree points beats the hell out of just strike points.

I've seen some to run him so hard , he ain't got no hair on it's tail when they tree him .

It's not the indication of speed most think it is ... first tree in good company is a better way of telling coon treeing speed.
Catching coon on the ground is simply because a dog is shifting from tracking a coon to lifting his head up and running body scent / looking for it with his eyes ... they catch it by looking up and cutting to the coon by sight ...
A medium track dog can catch coon be switching to sight and jumping ahead of a better track dog .
I rarely have hounds catch em' on the ground ... but Iv'e had alot of jagdterriers and airedales that could catch them ... the same terriers weren't even in the league of my good hounds when it came to track speed or trailing ability ... they just ditched the track and ran ahead by sight past the hounds.
Dogs that catch coon on the ground aren't doing it because they are so fast they run their nose into it's butt and then bite ....
good and bad
i would rather a dog tree the coon simply cus its easier on the dog and the coon both but also having a dog that has the ability to catch them on the ground is not a bad thing in my opinion. i dont get to expierence it often but thats what i think about it.
in order for a dog to track a coon by sight id say a dog would have to be a pretty good track dog to get close enough to see it...unless they happen to run into it..
i know of some black and tans in Nebraska that catch them all the time and are deadly accurate tree dogs too...
its just my opinion that they have to be good and fast track dogs to catch them... and drifting a track is still tracking in my book

Coon aren't that fast ... a slow hound can outrun them in a footrace or on the track.
Coon outrun them by being tricky , coon aren't fastgame like deer or coyotes .. most of the coon chase is the dog trailing the coon .
Coon double back alot if running creeks or fencerows ... a smart dog that learns their tricks and to look for them will catch alot because of his experience and brains way more so than his track speed.
Them ol hush mouth dogs will catch a few on the ground.

Caught one Thur night. Almost caught one Fri night. One Friday night had to run but I can't figure why they get caught. I mean dang just go up a tree. Why do some wait. Can they not hear good? I don't like catching them period. I need my coons. Matter of fact. Kinda worries me when they catch one here. Im afraid the Coon is sick.

i like a dog that will ocasionally catch a couple on the ground but would much rather them tree it instead
last sumer dogs run one in a 30 acer cornfield 3 loops then got shorter loops & dogs caught him. when we got there dogs were laying down with their toungs hanging out, coon was laying on his back trying to catch his breath. they was to hot to fight. we left him there resting.
that winter we run him again done the same thing. only that time when they caught him he had a bad night & didnt get up !! LOL i wish the way he run he'd a clum a tree. he'd a been a good one to leave to run again.

I love it. Run to catch!
My dogs catch one or two every year. I don't mind it as long as they don't do it more than that. I'd rather mine get treed with the coon looking down than kill em on the ground.
I say run to catch!! That shows a track dog!

The smarter , more experienced dogs are the fastest .. every style can be equally successful if executed well.
If you notice , most dogs that catch coon on the ground do it when other dogs are there to anchor they track and they pick up their head and cut to the coon ... alone , it's harder to bail on the track and take chances without it backfiring some ... it's how successfull foxhound packs that learn how to work together keep race going .. pretty basic , old school stuff.
Folks too often give credit to a certain style of dog or attribute a good dog to it's style ... but years of hunting with different dogs and different terrain open your mind .
caught em a time or two, but i hunt tree dogs, if i wanted ground catches Id be huntin yotes, or still running hogs, but i coon hunt, so i want MY dogs to tree, thats just me though
Catchin on the ground
in my opinion , it will make a better tree dog , and better track dog if they catch a few
