Fellow Georgia hunters, i got a question.

I was reading through the hunting regulations and rules on the WMA section. Part of the WMA section says ........ and i copied and pasted it ............. " Hunters are allowed to hunt raccoons with trail dogs only." What in the world does this mean exactly ? "trail dogs only " ??????????

Posted by Jonathan Crump on 05-13-2013 11:35 AM:

It has to be a scent hound breed. A dog that trails (tracks) its game.

We hunt the richmond hill wma all the time. Never any problems with the guys in green trucks.

Believe the only thing you can't hunt with are bulldogs and airdales.

Thats about right Andy. I have been in contact with the Chairman of the house wildlife committee, and i believe we will see some very positive rules for the WMA's coming up in the near future. Changes we as coonhunters can be excited about.

Hopefully no more locks on all of the gated roads or maybe we can buy a access key.

That would be nice!! Sux walking a mile or two down a perfectly good road to get to a dog!

I was on a wma earlier this year with my wife 2 kids and another friend. The warden was waiting on us when we got to the truck. No big deal I thought. Me and my friend showed him our license wma stamp and chatted for a minute. He asked if my wife had hers. Which she doesn't cause she mainly went to watch the kids incase dogs got far or something. That's when he informed me that she too must have it in order to be hunting. She never led a dog or touched a gun. Hopefully they will make some changes so its easier for nonhunters to tag along with a licensed hunter

The license change is not the kind of change we are looking for in terms of hunting. I don't think anything of the sort would ever float, especially since the passing of the biker and hiker type stamps that you must purchase now to do these types of activities.at is mainly being looked at is the availibilty of the WMAs to be used by the small game hunter, and havingg easy access to the roads etc.. So many times, we apply for field trial permits to use wma xyz, and it is not available simply because it is not an "open" season in place at the time of the scheduled hunt. What we are working for is to have these areas open for licensed hunts, regradless of time of year, and to have roads open also. Sure there will be times when they would want to close them before a scheduled large type state sponsored event, like a youth deer hunt, but for most part, if you have a scheduled lincensed hunt, licensed by a registry such as UKC, we are working to ensure the one of choice will be open for your event. This is not for any "kill" type hunts, or personal pleasure hunts. The personal pleasure hunts would be very nice, without the kill part, but that will have to be worked on at a later date, once we get our feet in the gate. Note that as is with every permitted hunt, license of any sort is not rerquired, so folks from out of state or non wma users could still hunt the area during your licensed events.
It will take some time to sink in, but it is believed that this part will float, and that will surely be something that will help the comp hunter. We are also working in the "kill" areas for the gates to be open during the small game seasons. to many older folks can not walk the long distances required on these areas with gates closed. It is a pure shame to get to a tree that a wheel chair bound hunter could have gotten to see, just by driving the road, and looking out the window. We do hope to make improvements here, but it will take support, and work on our part, the small game hunters.

After doing some checking, you can now use bulldogs and airedales for hog hunting on wma's. Also DNR is supposed to be posting road openings and closeings on their website as to let people which roads are effected before you decide to go. Hope this helps some.

I live in Rockmart and love to go to Paulding Forest. There is a Beautiful waterfall on it and i wanted to take my friends hiking up there. I called the game warden people and specifically asked them if my friends needed a WMA stamp if they were just going walking through the woods. They said no they do not on Paulding Forest but on some they do. I was glad to hear that. When I coonhunted it, 90 % of the time the roads were closed and I had to park and walk. I even took buddys with me coonhunting there and a couple of them just plain hated it. Its hills and walking. But the woods are huge. Around 27,000 acres i think. I love the privacy and its way less likely your dog will end up in a back yard than some smaller woods.

We already get our wma for most hunts. Season or not and a permit for outta state hunters. Robert I don't understand what your saying. Make it a automatic open for a licensed event without us having to tell em?

yu may get yours up there. most down here are closed, unless the seasons are in. There are many many details to be worked out, but it can and will benefit the small game hunter much more than meets the eye. early in the process right now, but work continues.

As far the the walking thing, the problem that Georgia has is very simple. Not even the Game Rangers understand the laws that goveren all the WMAs. The legislature passed a "user fee" that covers every wma in Georgia. A park type pass is required, wether they enforce it or not. That includes bird watchers etc.. Passed in 2012. It may have been what is called a rules change, that can be done by WRD under the authority of Broad latitude given to them by the legilature. In any event, it is required. Face it, why should the hunter fit the bill for the bulk of the deal? Hunting license is required for sportsman to use the area. Whats wrong about others having to have "passes" to use the area?

The part of our local wma that's state owned. Enforces the user fees to. On our hunts. We have to get them approved by the wrd office in Gainsville. We didn't get one for our may hunt this yr though. They claimed somebody else was using it. I doubt we could get one during deer season either. If you need to see a copy of a permit. Just let me know. I'll send ya one.
