Real Coonhounds Only
If my young hound won't open on track, watch for a big discount on him when I sell. I can see all the coons I want to see by using a trail camera and if I want hides I can trap all I want and if I want to hear a chop mouth dog I can rile up my neighbors muts. A @%#$ hound that won't open on track or chops on track ain't no coonhound. Hearing the race is half of what coon hunting is. What's your take on what has happened to coon hunting?
I also love listening to a bawl mouth dog on track but I like a dog that chops on the tree.

Damon sorry my friend but I have to ask. Here in Ohio, season comes in Nov. 10th and goes out January 31st. November then has 21 total nights to hunt, December has 31 total nights to hunt and January has 31 total nights to hunt. Now my math says that is a total of 83 nights of season if you hunt every night including Christmas. Where are you picking up those extra 10 to 20 nights per year to get to 289 in 3 years??
I do recall that some specific areas near lake erie get to hunt some in February. Do you live near there, or do you drive there most nights in February, or would you have maybe brought season in a lil early, so to speak. LOL!!
That is quite a few coon to have treed no matter what. My math says that is a 2.1 coons per night average. Not to bad. Down here a good dog will average about one coon on the outside for every 90 minutes If you keep track all the way through the season. By the way, I like mine to Bawl on a cold track, bawl & chop on a medium track, and chop every breath on a screamer. Then I want 120 barks per minute on the tree for at least 4 hours. Is that asking too much????

the best coon dog i have ever hunted with was tight on track. heck i don't care if they say much on ground long as they have a coon in the tree. everyone has a different idea of what a coon dog is. A coon dog is one that can produce a coon consistently night in night out under most any circumstances.

and if your all about the race try some fox hounds or beagles. they will most likely suit your open trailing needs.

Some guys enjoy the challenge between dog and coon .. and listening to it play out .
Some folks hunt because of the challenge between their dog and other dogs ... or their handling and the rest of the cast.
Everyone can be right , but different .... as long as the folks that don't care about the real dogwork and challenge of working up a coon and treeing it don't try and insult those who do.
What about squall mouth dogs????? Can they be coon dogs?? Must not be..

sorry about math
Of how many days in season works got my brain fryed with reading blue prints on are mills we are rebuilding them a lot to take in last few weeks but I only count coon killed during season I keep a note book in truck and write down every coon and were what time.Nite CH Shivers Magic Buckeye is my chop mouth dog she is a blue tick very rarely ever plain slicks but sometimes can't find coon(pine trees or just plain monster trees) not I'll in anyway not junky, and trees about 120 bpm on tree pressure tree dog and trees me a pile of coon and fast not perfect and wouldn't say the best I have hunted but to say she isn't a coo dog because she is chop on ground and a clear tree chop is just silly and one mans opinion and he is intitled to it!

the dog that shows you coons are the coon dogs.
I don't care if he whistles; if he's "COON DOG" enough he can eat my feed for a long time. Tom

I don't care what they sound like as long as I can hear them and they tree plenty of coon and do it right . Sure we like a houndy big mouth but it doesn't have anything to do with coon treeing ability and when it boils down to it most chop mouth track dogs are quicker than the average bawl mouth track dog

Yall can say what you want to but if it dont open on track then its a cull according to the coonhound standard. I quit coonhunting 15 years ago and just recently started back and I cant believe the differenc in dogs. The dogs I have hunted with lately are tight or silent on track and slick tree a lot more. It seems people have been trying to fix the coondog and have made some very bad mistakes and turned the coonhound into a cur dog. I have nothing against cur dogs but I want to hear a race when I go coon hunting. The thing that tickles me is now that yall have ruined the coonhound you call everything that barks on the ground a babbler and want to do away with strike points because your cur hounds cant beat an honest strike dog.

prefer BAWL mouth allthe way ..... but like any open trailer....medium hunter
A dog does not have to open on track to be moving that track, just because a dog is tight mouthed, does not mean he is slow, most times when a good track dog shuts up, he is gaining ground on the coon...
Alot of times when a dog is giving alot of mouth , he is actually hollerin for help, lol or struggling to figure out where the coon went, and people think they are good track dogs...
I like a dog to open as soon as they smell a coon scent, and then open just enough to let me know where he went, then locate and tree, and have a racoon!

AMEN Gunslinger, I agree with youall the way. There are a fw babblers out there , that is true. But there are also a few hounds out there with a substantially better nose than the average dog, thus making the real coondog look like a babbler.
I like to HEAR all aspects of a coonhound too, not just the treeing part. If I wanted to hear a treedog ONLY, I would hunt a Norwegian Elkhound, LOL. They handle well, and will have the meat when they tree.
But me I like a dog to open on track. Again I do prefer a dog that bawls on a cold track, Bawl & Chop on a medium track, and straight chop on a red hot track. that way I not only know what type track they are worrking, I can also judge things like track speed, as well which is also important to me. and Guess what, I still get to hear a 120 bark per minute treedog. But thats just me, and that is what I breed for. If somebody else likes a tight mouthed dog, and are breeding tight mouthed dogs, then that is fine with me, just be man enough to own it. How many stud dog adds have you read that say. My stud is silent to semi-silent??? I'm guessing NONE. But you will see the verbage that goes something like this. My dog is an HONEST strike dog, thus insinuating that most dogs theat open quicker than his is actually babbling when they do so.
So my advise is Own up to what you are hunting!!

Best dog I ever hunted was a chop mouth dog all the way but he opened when he smelled a coon and he opened according to the track when he treed he had the meat. This dog was almost unbeatable, your tight mouth dogs today would never touch him. michael.magorian your little smartxxx remark was cute but thats all not being nostalgic I'm being realistic. Breeding tight mouth dogs is ruining the houind, I dont like a babbler any better than you do but a hound is supposed to open on track. Another thing to consider with your comment about ground catches, a hound is supposed to TREE a coon not catch it but barking on track dont keep a dog from catching a coon but running through the woods looking for a tree does.

You really think that the entire coonhound community has changed that much since 1998? I think you are being a little dramatic. You can say I'm being a smart@$$ all you want, but I call them as I see them. I personally like a tight mouth dog that wants to get at a coon, and let the world know when the job gets done. I have also noticed that people that say, "coonhounds should tree coons," haven't had one that could catch one on the ground. I sure don't mind consistent ground catches, or waiting outside a hole for an hour to see a coon, but I do get nervous when the dogs climb.
