Master of Hounds Major Problem.....What you think?

I have personally been thinking of becoming a master of hounds for a while, but people from the Club asked me to be one. My question is,

How hard is it to actually become a Master of Hounds?

How long does it take?

How much does it cost?

I really appreciate you guy/girls reading this and would love answers to these questions and/or to talk.

Thanks and God Bless ya.

It is not hard. It does take a little while. It isn't that painful.

Go for it.

Ain't to hard. Its open book lol. Make the club pay for it. Then you'll only have your time in it. Which will be a few long nights sitting around watching.

and 3 apprentice forms.

3 club officers need to endorse you and sign the application form. You will need to apprentice under 3 MOHs and get them to sign the forms. Once that is done send the application and the 3 completed aprentice forms to UKC along with a $25 application fee.

UKC will then send you a written test. After you complete the test send it in along with the MOH license fee. If you don't pass the test UKC will generally allow you to retake the test. If you pass the test your're a licensed MOH.

Good luck!

That's not even close. First you request a written test. You take it (which includes the application) and mail it back in with a $20 fee and three club officer's signatures. Then, if you pass, you will receive the apprenticeship forms in the mail. You do three apprenticeships and the Master of Hounds approves of you and we will issue you a MOH number and a license.

It's not that difficult but there are a lot of people who don't pass the written test. It is open book but sometimes a guy thinks he knows the answer without looking. It's easy to make mistakes that way. And we do not put any trick questions in. We want people who know the rules and know how to find information they may not be 100% about in the rulebook.

Send me your name and address and I'll get the test mailed to you.

Paul thanks, What you are saying sounds exactly what a older man said to me. I really appreciate all you guys. Will PM you my address.

In addition to the information that Paul gave you let me add some things that you should consider while making your decision. 1- are you able to stay calm in situations where people around you are upset, excited, irrational? 2- Are you assertive and/or self-confident without being egotistical? 3- Are you able to be absolutely impartial (there may come a time when you need to take an unpleasant action involving a close friend)?

This is worth repeating IMO.

No one knows everything all the time......the ability to read and comprehend the rules is much more valuable than anyone that "thinks" they know everything.

Cowboy ,

Thanks for the things you mentioned. I agree with what you said and I myself will scratch my best friend if I a non hunting judge. I start each hunt/drop with a prayer and Ask God for safety and wisdom. I really do appreciate what each of ya'll have said. I will continue to pray and follow what I feel led to do.

Very good points! We should have those questions on the application. Or at least in the written material on how to become a MOH.

And I love the Larry Packe quote. He was a great guy.
