Garmin used at field trials?

Was at a hunt this weekend and during the field trial guys were tracking there dogs during the event with there Garmin's.

I looked up the rules for field trials and there is nothing about the use of them. I know you cannot in the night hunt but what about other events?

I'm not talking about just collars on- they were actually watching where there dogs were during the event.

UKC-?????

7. Electronic Devices Prohibited. Training collar may be worn but transmitter must be left at vehicle. No electronic squallers. Tracking collars are permitted and there are no restrictions in using them. No other electronic devices besides a hunting light may be used.

Yes you can use a garmin during a htx hunt. Todd covered this a while back.

I've done it once and seen others do the same since we have them on the dog anyway in case they don't show up at the end so we can find them . Mostly just curiosity since you never call your dog in a field trial . Just line judges & tree judges that call what they see in plain sight . No advantage .

I guess they might show you're wasteing money on the dog .

I read that about the HTX to . I guess with just one dog out it really don't matter , again no advantage except maybe knowing he's headed for trouble . HTX isn't a competition .

HTX ?

What about a field trial? A HTX is one dog not competing against others. A field trial they are competing.

just getting started with dogsbought the alpha 100 seem to be the best deal for tracking and training been reading on use during comp. remember never hunted comp. but dont see how to cheet with it maybe catch a cheet who says a dog moved. ect but sure someone will set me straght lol

There is absolutely no advantage or disadvantage to using a tracking system of any kind in a field trial other than the safety of the dog...You have start, finish line and tree judges that judge what the dog is doing and that it is done according to the rules. In many cases the handler of the dog has no idea what the dog has done until they get there to handle(hopefully at the tree) their dog.

Many times the dog is not even at the tree.

MANY of these field trials are held with roads in clear sight and in some cases less than 100 yards from the roads...

What other possible advantage would there be?

I doubt they've had to consider it before . Actually if anybody got a little more kick out of it why not ? Unless you have all dogs on your garmin all you'd see is yours and even then I'm not sure in a close race it would show enough difference to see who was leading . Again except for seeing if their coming theres not much point to it . I usually leave mine locked in the truck until red don't show up .
Kinda like useing them in a water race , you can do it but whats the point .

Posted by Allen / UKC on 04-17-2013 02:42 PM:

There are no restrictions against using tracking telemetry during the course of a Field Trial. We agree in that anyone using them would not have any advantage, when it comes to winning the contest.

Todd, Could you just put it here in writing again about Garmins and HTX?

Use Of Telemetry Systems On A Hunt Test

Rule 7 of the Hunt Test Rules deals with electronic devices. Electronic devices are, for the most part, prohibited from use on a licensed Hunt Test. There is a sentence in Rule 7 that says, “Tracking collars are permitted.” That was always interpreted, however, to mean that a handler could run his dog with a tracking collar on him, but that you could not use the receiver for the tracking collar during hunting time. As we look more closely at that interpretation, we really have to ask ourselves what it would hurt to allow an individual to see where there hound is at any given moment. That’s what we would do if we were pleasure hunting. Maybe the dog is getting into a situation that could be dangerous, or maybe we just need to know which side of the river he is on. I bet there are not many nights spent pleasure hunting where the Garmin stays in its holster until it’s time to go home.

Effective immediately, UKC will no longer have any restrictions on the use of tracking collars while participating in a UKC Hunt Test.
