-- Brood female? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928312520)

Brood female?

Whats a brood female??
Is that like a type of chicken?

Posted by runnin rebels on 04-06-2013 12:34 AM:

It is a female who possesses few or no desired traits that would allow it to tree a coon, yet it is expected to put desired traits into its pups that will allow them to tree a coon. It is a truly amazing breeding program!

Its just like a brood sire... something someone hopes to make money on and sometimes it works and sometimes it dont just like breeding world champ to world champ dont mean you get world champs

So why would you want to breed a female like that?
Should they not be culled?

Posted by JeepsandGsds on 04-06-2013 01:30 AM:

They would be used to raise pups don't mean that they can tree a coon a lot never get a chance

there have been some super brood females that have never treed a coon reproduce coon dogs... and lots of coon dogs that couldnt reproduce a good dud

but then you have the female that has been hunted and proven herself and retired to the brood pen . a good blooded dog can be used as a brood gyp in hopes of passing along the genes she posseses without her being proven herself . if it's gonna happen it's gonna happen regardless of being hunted or not . lot's of these world beaters are one hit wonders and don't pass on any desired genes to the pups .

Not disagreeing just wondering what dogs you're referring to? Are you talking world hunt winners or just good country coondogs? I personally think brood bitches are crap but that's just my opinion.

Everyone wants all grand pups or pups from a titled female. Best acting litter of pups I have raised came out of two pr dogs. They either got it or they don't. Doesn't matter what title they have in front of there name has more to do with being bred in to them.

I agree 100% titles don't make a dog or a reproducer but I'm betting the litter you mentioned came from two pr dogs that could tree coons.

So its ok to breed a so called brood female & expect good pups?
Why don't you hear of a brood stud?
Same difference is'nt it?

Posted by robert whitten on 04-07-2013 05:02 PM:

well that's just do to the times we live in where everyone want's the [ name ] on their dogs to make pups worth more money . back when we just hunted for fun and furs an old grade dog that could do it day in and day out was in high demand as a stud . in the 70's I had a grade walker dog that every body around me wanted pups out of . this is all genetic folks . you take to papered sisters and hunt the fire out of one and put the other in the brood pen your chances of getting good pups out of the two are JUST THE SAME . same as if you keep two brothers and do the same , it's in the genes not how much they are hunted or how many titles they have in front of their name .

Brood Females-I hunt my females but I do know of several older breeders that kept brood females and titled their males. In the day a brood female that reproduced was better kept in the breeding pen instead of in the woods.

i have not won any world hunts but have a female here that will not tree a coon that has15 pups who will all tree a cooon fixing tohave another litter any day and more spoken for than she will probably have even considering she had 15 the last litter... she also has almost no titled dogs in her pedigree... i do tend to go against the grain most times but so far out of 4 litters old enough to hunt there has not been one pup that would not or has not treed a coon.... very lucky to have people believe in them enough to try them and see.... none are finished hounds but no one will price them either... and who knows this litter could all be duds.... none of the females are what i call coon dogs but all will tree except the one...

Don't get the wrong idea....I'm not knocking you at all. Can I ask what made you decide to breed her that first time? I have a friend that had a decent dog years ago and when he wanted a pup he'd go but any registered female he could get cheap and breed her.

the dog was raised a house dog until10 months old and got to big for their house and was given to me... my dogs needed something in the mouth department and she had it... also my male had no pups and i wanted to know what he would reproduce if bred to nothing so i tried it and pretty happy with the results.... in fact almost every top hound i have ever owned came from nothing... the ones i bought from big name dogs were average at best.... has just always been my luck
