ideal track age??
When turning a coon out for a pup what is the ideal time to let the scent settle? We have all seen dogs turned inside out when cut on a coon crossing the road, so how long do you put the put on the track after old ricky bolts?? Thanks

I usually wait an hour or 2. I have noticed if you work the coon with a dog before u turn it loose sometimes they will go a long ways before going up a tree.
When starting a young dog, I normally wait 15 to 20 minutes, like it to be good and hot but not so hot they stand on there head, works for me.

15-30 minutes for a pup.. The scent still needs to be strong for a pup ..

Turning one out for a pup is nothing like turning out on one crossing a rd. That rd does something to the scent. Never seen anything quit like it. A pups first caged Coon here. I get in a big field. Wet Coon down. Turn it out. Soon as it hits the woods. I turn pup out. Most times they will tree it. Next Coon I wait a little while. Try and take it about 100 yards down a creek. Turn it out. Bring cage back. Wait bout 10 min. Cut pup loose. Hopefully it will go 100 yards to strike. If not I walk it. Then that's bout it for caged coons. I also never nowdays let a pup see one in a cage.
