anyone keep a log??

I always wanted to keep a log on my dogs trees...even if it was simple...coon seen/den/slick. Or a little more complex adding in time it took etc...

Just never did....but got to thinking...I known the last 9 trees I've been to of mypups had a coon in it in the last week...

Would be nice to have a journal or records of sorts to look back on...

Heck I could do it on my phone...just need to remember to do it I reckon...I wanted to start with this pup last year when I started him and just never did..

I have done it fairly frequently throughout the years. Keeping a journal shows I remember more good hunts than bad.

Lol! That's what I was wondering...I think my dog is pretty accurate...but a long term record might show different....had a bad night a week ago and walked to a questionable den and a true slick...he ain't missed since...before that I can't remember accurately enough..I known I rarely get on him because of a true slick...

I kept track of 50 turnouts with my old Bubba dog years ago. He made 50 trees: 2 dens, 3 slicks and 45 coons. I believe it was in March of 2003. He was as deadly accurate as any dog I have ever seen. You always hear the term used 99% accurate. I probably used that term to describe Bubba myself on more than one occasion. Numbers don't lie.

I kept a calender several years ago and marked on it what dogs were hunted and how many trees were made and how many coons were seen. I found that calender this winter and it was interesting to look back and remember some of those dogs and those hunts. I think it is the best form of evaluation that I can use on a dog. If I go by memory I don't always remember the really bad nights. I also think that logging hunts can help judge improvement or allow you to see what time of the year a dog might look it's best. After writing this I think I will start logging hunts again. LOL

I made me a spreadsheet that has date, time hunted, weather, # of tracks, # of trees, # of coon seen plus comment section etc. It really helps with a young hound. At the end of the month I used the # of hunts, tracks, trees etc to come up with a average of how accurate my dog was and what he needed to work on. Also in walk with wick volume 2 he has a evaluation sheet in it. I can send the one I made in a email if anybody wants it.

Oh, keep in mind that it's really better to be honest and grade your hound hard. Other wise keeping records really don't do you any good and it want be a true account of how he/she performs.

Posted by Rocketman55 on 04-04-2013 02:21 PM:

I too have done this for many many years, probably 25 or more. But I only keep those records during hunting season. I do that because that is the time of the year when I truely can tell if the dog is empty or not. No leaves to hide any mistakes that may be taking place, lol!!

I see a lot of folks from time to time talking about accuracy on this board and have come to the conclusion that many of them really have no clue as to what they they are talking about.

My really good hounds have been able to attain an 90 percentile accuracy rate and that is when I know they have made a true coondog.

I keep a calender and mark down all the nights hunted , what dogs , trees made , coon seen and any other notes, been doing it for years. I go back and tally it up at the end of the year, kind of neat to see the percentages

I save in the notepad on my phone dog hunted and number of trees. Coon, den or slick. I also keep up with any trash they ran. It takes 15 seconds after I get done hunting or the next morning.

Mauser, you keep a log hunting Trackman dogs?

Posted by Jamie Smallwood on 04-04-2013 04:24 PM:

I only keep up with one during season, simple fact is leaves are off and that tells on one big time. I usually just keep up with it on my phone and I count dens as slicks unless see coon. But I didn't get hunting this season but on 40 turn outs my Jess female managed to have 32 coons, 1 slick, 7 dens, and the percent would be 80% and I can live with that.
My young Snow female I have made 18 drops with her she had 12 coons, 3 dens, 3 slicks which would make her percentage 67%, she usually is a 70-75% no pretty dang close.

Thanx guys! Good stuff! I need to start...once I was in a habit it would be simple..and I think it'd be interesting to look back on...

dperry, I don't now..just a thought I had....really no reason other than just something to look back on and get stats from...I don't care what the numbers say..I'm happy with both our Trackman younguns...my buddies is a grand nite and mine has been in a few hunts and just needs a first and he will be a note champion...will be 2 years old in a few weeks....I know the last 9 trees I've been to this week with mine has had a coon in it...maybe tomorrow nite he'll get that first!

For the past 3 years, I have kept a spreadsheet for each night hunted. Total trees, circle, minus and plus, as if I was in a hunt.

Multiple coons in a tree is counted as one coon.

I wanted to know how accurate my dog was.

journals

I have kept a personal journal and one for my dogs for several years. On the dog journal I list all heat cycles, health issues and anything else pertaining to the dogs. I record all hunts, where I went who I went with, which dogs were taken. I try to be totally honest about the dogs performance. Why have a record if it is not accurate?
