Pups with Trained dogs?

What are your opinions. Do you hunt a 1 year old pup that will run track with a good trained dog or just let her figure it out for herself?

If you want more of and independent dog hunt the crap out of it by itself for a couple months. What I've seen in dogs that are hunted alone a lot is they lack track speed. So when you get to the point where it'll run and tree regularly on its own start hunting it with quicker paced track runners jmo.

First just let me say this is my opinion, it may or may not be the best method but since you asked I thought I would share. The chance of a young dog learning bad habits is a lot less when hunted with a good broke dog and your chances of showing it more coon are far greater. When the young dog starts running & treeing regularly it's time to break them off and hunt them alone, I don't think a dog can ever reach its full potential until its has been hunted alone a lot. Now if your only other option is to hunt your young dog with an old dog with a lot of bad habits, I would rather just hunt it alone. Be consistent in showing the dog what you like with praise and what you dislike with discipline. Good luck.

Thanks. I have a had a dog in the past be a good dog but was so independent that when she was hunted with other dogs she looks lost out there but at the same time i don't want a dog that just waits for another dog to start tracking and never hunt on her own.

A dogs track speed has nothing to do with who or what it's hunted with.... That is something that a dog is born with and either has it or doesn't.

And if he is faster with other dogs that means he is riding the dog doing all the work and is on his way to making a professional me tooer!!!!!

my 2 cents worth

hunting a pup with another dog is only to expose the pup to coon and get it to want them bad enough to try to get after them on its own. once a pup will try and track a coon it should be hunted alone. the longer you hunt it with another dog after that the harder it will be to single out.
you dont teach how to run and tree, you only teach what to run and tree.

Lol no I'm good... Of course it's in the breeding and its in them or its not but I've myself turned a slow independent track dog into a independent speed demon this way. The competiton made it speed her up.

very few dogs are competitive... i have owned one in 30 years and until you own one you will never know what im talking about... a competitive dog doesnt have to be alone to win and the better the competition the harder they try to beat them

i thought the ? was when to single out a 1 yr old pup so it can learn to tree a coon alone.
competitive or not its got to be able to tree a coon alone to be any kind of competition other then a hitch hiker.

The best thing i have found is being able to let your pup run loose. Primarily use the old dog for check dog
