Fighting at the tree..

How common is it to have 4 males on the same tree and a squabble on the tree...my dog has never shown any sign of being aggressive...got scratched last night..I saw dogs battleing for position...neither dogs broke the skin...I wouldn't have called it a fight...and,,,the judge scratched his own dog....this was my first hunt...and never thought it would have turned out like this...just was wondering how often this happens ,with four big male on a small tree..

i have been in alotta hunt and walked along on alot were i am it is rare but it does happen.

Why do dogs need to "battle for position" ??

With so many posts about dishonest judges, it sounds to me like your cast had an honest one.

Put 4 male dogs on a small tree, it happens quite a bit.

On the final 16 of autumn oaks this past year I drew GrNt Mojo on Tapp ... GrNt moonlight Aftershock .. GrNt Tough Times Bodie and me hunting GrNt Skuna River Fred Bear.

First drop and tree of the night they all struck red Hot and just all 4 piled on a tree and you could barely hear yourself think . Took us a few to get in there all when we did all 4 where treed belly up on a basketball sized tree and never heard an off bark , growl ... Treed as clean as could be . This IMO is pretty rare to see of 4... 65-75 lbs adult male stud dogs. Mine is a giant wimp and before I left the club I heard the typical ..."watch out for so and so they are rough!" .... Well I think those guys where full of it

The rest of the night they never treed together again I don't believe ... But just thought I'd share . Typically with the average dog you bound to have one dog get mad or crowded and face bark or fight ... I don't tolerate It personally but some people call it "jockeying for position " which is just a load of BULL

Dont wanna start anything and ya cant say if ya didnt see it. Sounds like there was some blowin.Did anybodys dog get down off the tree.Was anybody interfered with?

No reason ten male dogs can't tree together and not fight. "Battling for position" sounds like another way to hide the real problem and not call it what it is, aggression. Doesn't matter if they brake the skin or not, if it satisfied the judge that both parts of the rule were met then he done the right thing. I mean he scratched his own dog for it.

if you got a good dog and he won't leave, then you gonna get him labeled as the meanest thing there is because he stays with them killers that fight on and off the tree.

This is food for thought everyone wants one to stay no matter the cost right. This the way i see it if it is outright fight i had rather mine leave and NOT GET SCRATCHED and go on to the finals. You can not win the cast if you get scratched.

I'm with Brandon . I want mine to back up or leave ... If your dog is smart they will keep clear of the rough dog the rest of the night

We have done it to ourselves. Over the last 15 years with our attempt to breed theses 150 bpm tree dogs that can't track to save there a$$ and that is what you get !! I remember back in the 70 and 80s you could have 5-6 dogs in the woods on a tree and never heard an off bark growl are anything close to aggression and as we have bred for more tree power we have done it to ourselves and we are the only ones that can fix it!!!!!jmo

A night back in 1978 the man who got me started hunting hounds, "Richard" picked me up and said we were going to meet a guy to try out his dog. We all turned loose and soon treed, when we got to the tree, this man’s dog was treeing with his butt against the tree and our hounds were both back about 6-7 feet,
I remember the look on Dicks face, our hounds were usually stand on the wood tree dogs. I remember Dick calmly said, "You'll take $150 for him", The guy said, "yep", Dick paid him, took the leash from the man, never saying another word, just pulled out his pistol and shot the dog right there in front of the man. I can't repeat the rest of the conversation on here, But I smiled all the way home.

I dont care what nobody says or what the root cause is.. Ive been all over the country in all registries.. The answer to your question is. It does happen quite often when you get several males on the same tree wherher the tree is 5in around or 5 feet.. How often several males get on the tree together just depends... In my experience most of the time when all dogs are in on it it gets over looked.. Independence that is bred into them and lack of being hunted in a pack type enviroment causes them to get greedy.. 30-40 years ago a lot of people hunted a pack of dogs and didnt just keep one singled out.. The emphasis used to be on beating the other dogs to the tree and now its to get on your own tree all together.. Thats my experience. Take it for what its worth to you..

Im with Jon. Some dogs can't stand it. Hunt em night after night alone. Never put em in a situation this could happen until a hunt. Anytime you draw 4 males it could happen if they all tree together. Which never hardly happens anymore. That's one reason I believe I like hunting females better. Not many times I've ever drawn a cast full of females. If your dog is really not aggressive though. Your fine. You may hunt him the rest of his days and never have another problem. The barred for fighting rule will catch up with those who have a real problem most times.

I have seen 10 dogs on one tree many times bear hunting. No blowing of any sort took place. Trees are round not square, there is room. They are supost to bark at and fight the game up the tree not each other. Jockey for position, not in coonhunting,horse racing yes.

It is my experience that dogs fighting at the tree on competition hunts is not as bad as it used to be. I believe 15-20 years ago it was a lot worse. I also believe folks got tired of feeding, paying entry fees, and getting bad mouthed about having an an alligator that eventually gets them barred. I had a super Dual Grand in the late 90's and early 00's that took me a very long time to finish because he would not stay treed with face barkers and ill dogs. He would go tree another coon. Many times he would tree a coon and you would hear a mean dog come in and run him off and get credit for the coon. I specifically remember one night hunting him in NiteCh at SETWA Days I heard him strike and tree and he was treed a minute or so before the next dog arrived. When that dog came in you could hear the "position jockeying" and my dog left and struck another track. At this time the aggressive dog packed his crap and left the tree too. Now that was a hammerhead.

i dont like em like that wont hunt one doin it,was just womderin how bad it was and if any of the dogs were interfered with.nobody bit anybody, sounded like blowin and head slingin. and im still not sure of the interference.guess ya had to be there.

Thanks for everyone's opinion...I have only been doing this for 2 yrs....and my male that got scratched, he has only hunted a few times with other (strange ) dogs...this is because there are no other hunters near by to hunt with...wish there were...so this dog has hunted primarily alone..I have driven 3 hours to s.ga to hunt with other dogs..1 ntch...1 grntch...and he treed his on coon...( split )...but never on same tree..I have never seen aggression in this dog...maybe it was he that initiated the fighting...we'll never know...
