Dogs shot and killed during a UKC event
Im not much for voicing my opinion on the internet but in this case I feel it is pretty obvious. Two dogs were killed this weekend in a UKC event and UKC has not even made a phone call or voiced any support to the owners of these hounds. I know this is not the first time this has happened but maybe its time something is done. We continue to pay to register our hounds and pay entries to hunts but UKC hasnt done a thing in this situation to support a long time member of UKC. I dk for sure but i would guess UKC probably has lawyers that work for them already so maybe a little help would be nice. Come on UKC!!!!
I got mixed feelings about UKC's responsibility in these kinds of things....
YES they should certainly offer moral support , some standard legal advice and insist that clubs do their best to choose good guides.
But NO UKC isn't responsible for all the uncontrollable events across the nation and all the varying state laws. No more so than Remington should be responsible for murder with guns or Ford with car accidents.
Hunting dog shootings are a very bad deal, but it is a local law enforcement matter. The State laws should protect ANY wayward livestock(including dogs) that gets out of pocket and anyone that uses deadly force should have to justify it to the satisfaction of the Law.
I am all for landowner rights and the protection thereof, but those rights do NOT extend to shooting other people's animals just because they happened to stray onto their property. There must be a balance of property rights and animal owner rights. Unfortunately 90% of the public do not understand the sport of Coonhunting and that number is rising in todays world.

In Missouri our local Sheriff is the Law of the Land and if he doesn't use good judgment, I campaign against him and vote him out, the same is true of the local Prosecuting Attorney. Much of what happens in these dog killings comes down to these two people and we should hold their feet to the fire.

Obiously UKC isnt going to represent the dog owners in court, but even a call to local law enforcement from UKC to encourage that something needs to be done might help things along or even a call to the dog owner offering some advice on how to handle the situation just to let the dog owner that UKC is there and if they need any advice they might be able to help.
Yep, I don't see nothing wrong with that... and maybe a form letter explaining how Nite Hunts are conducted and coordinated with state law by Permit might also help some.
I dunno, the whole thing is frustrating and infuriating for everyone.

I agree ukc isn't liable but they should offer some support. The very least they could do is put something together to help folks follow the proper steps after a dog is killed.

Here's a Question
How would people feel if UKC added two or three dollars more to each registration and that money was specifically for legal fees in certain situations. UKC could easily find local attorneys to represent the houndsman, that way the local attorney would be familiar with state law. It would be like a legal defense plan included in your registration. I for one would be willing to spend the extra money. First step though is to put some laws on the books with some meat to it that would send a clear message, not the generic animal cruelty laws, but one specific about harming a hound.
ukc
Ukc should be the go to source for dog rights issue ;however, it doesn't seem to be the case. They are more than happy to sit on their hands and stay very quit. Why is that? Ukc,akc, pkc all have something in common we lover dog and do what we do with them. With these overwhelming numbers why don't we have a bigger voice in legislation when it comes to our rights. All I've seen and hear is we are a small group, we are not a some group. At the end of the day we just like the guys that hunt, beagles. Lab, running dogs.retrievers ...ext there's thounsands of us but yet we are powerless. Why? I seen dogs law but yet there's no bite to them. Why.

We are not a small group of people that love and want to protect our dogs. We just think small.
Loyd I agree with you our registries dont seem to be active in legislation. Instead of uniting best I can tell as an outsider looking in they act as competitors and today is a era we dont need to segregate. If I recall it was Steve Fielder that attempted to unite the organizations a few years back while he was still active but I havent seen any positive strides that the meeting was successful. Steve posts some very common sense conservative legistation remarks on facebook and he may have commented on some of the dog shootings. I read his remarks because I think very much like he does. Steve might be someone to contact for support? Could be worth a try.
Sorry to hear about this ordeal man people have such a high lack of respect these days its sickning. Wish you the best of luck and if theres any way I can help im a phone call or email away.
