With all the negative comp hunt posting!
I will share some positive boys because its wasn't and isn't all bad it's supposed to be fun! I have had bad nights and nights I'd rather not talk about.
When I was sixteen I was in the Kentucky state youth championship boy was I having a ball that night. I remember it like yesterday my old dog Midnight Major went in there and struck honest for 50 got treed for 125 deep and lonely, had the meat 175+ All other dogs took minus and or circle. We cut em again up a creek all dogs struck in and once again I took 50 honest strike points only 10 minutes left in a two hour hunt. Well all other dogs got treed together close and old major was around the back of a bluff hammering away deep and lonely! I was winning that cast the other guys took circle with two minutes left I coulda treed for 125 and made em walk but I remembered my grandpa saying sometimes its better to lay back when you're winning they turned in on him but never made it to the tree, hunt was over. I won the cast with 175+ all them hounds backed him and when we got there I kicked myself all the way to the truck because boys he had mr. Ringtail treed way up high could see the whole body... Ill never forget that night all of us had a good time non hunting judge was fair and honest all night he told me on the way to the truck I should have treed him because he was right and even he could tell. That night I got sixth place overall had I treed that last tree I woulda had my First place and he woulda made nite champion. But I was proud to take sixth even if I was disappointed with what could have been. All of us kids didn't argue and we called our dogs for what they did! One of my all time favorite memories and one of the reasons I am still hooked today. I placed 7th overall the following year with Major in the same hunt. I wish I could hunt one more night with him just to hear him die onto a tree was a true treasure. Coonhunting should be a great time guys I love it. Competition hunts are the test of your dogs ability. It has been some of the most treasured times in my life out there with three other guys and their hounds trying to determine which dog has the most salt that night.
Good post
