I don’t know how much the dog should weigh but 2 cups is probably not enough feed. I know it isn’t if you are hunting it much.

Take the dog to the vet and make sure it is clean from any worms or other sickness. If it is and you are hunting the dog hard and really want it to perform at the peak of its performance level. Then go and get a bag of Pro plan sport. Just don’t look at the price its $50 for 37.5 lb. I have been feeding it to my gyp for 2 weeks now. She is a little over 1/2 way through the bag and man you would not believe the difference in the dog. We have always had problems keeping weight on her. She has put on a lot of lean muscle since we started feeding it. She has not gained an OZ of fat but she has really put on a lot of muscle. She went from hip bones and ribs showing to muscles rippling when she walks. This stuff is amazing.

Dog has something wrong with it...wormy, change feed, feed more. My dogs weigh about 65 lbs and I feed 1 coffee can full and a cup more. That's about 4 1/4 cups. Hunt about 2xs a week and they do fine. I feed them scraps and stuff too...whatever we don't eat you know.

Posted by englishbuddy on 03-20-2013 11:24 PM:

go to your local butcher shop an get some meat scraps .... that puts on weight as fast as any

Posted by CGRADR07 on 03-21-2013 12:25 AM:

*Free Feeder*
Then everyday mix up some Quick Oats, 2 Eggs, and milk replacer. Your dog will have meat on its bones within two weeks.

I would look into Health issues, if not health issues then Look at the Fat content on the feed your feeding. When it's colder like it has been a HIGHER fat content is best along with the high protein. 18% fat or higher is best for a dog thru out the winter time. Double your feed for a few weeks and see, Healthy Coat is a supplement that will put weight one one, Rice Bran, or just find a Weight Supplement at your local feed store!

probably need some feedback from the thread starter. there have been some good ideas thrown out.

all we know is that dog is getting 2 cups at night.

2 cups of what?
how often is the dog hunted?
how often is the dog wormed?

Diamond green & yellow bag

Posted by Nat Thomas on 03-21-2013 07:14 AM:

You need to put the dog on full feed and let him learn to self regulate. Once he gets weight back on you can begin to change around his portion size. Instead of wasting money on rice, eggs, milk replacer and all that crap, just take the money you would save and invest it in a better quality dog food. 2 cups of the diamond green and yellow bag is enough feed for a miniature poodle. On that feed with an average dog with a moderate to low activity level it's going to take 5-6 cups a day. If you spent a little extra money and bought Native level 3 or 4, or Diamond EA you could have a dog that has a high activity level and feed it 4 cups...

Most people use the high price as an excuse to not feed their hound a premium food while they are driving a $20,000 truck with 2,000$+ in equipment, and a 2500$(very low end) dog.... But can't spent an extra 10$ on a bag of dog food... Go ahead and everytime your family is going to have a meat based protein for supper (steak, chicken, etc) swap it out for corn, wheat middlings and barley by products and see how well you like it and how your body responds.

Training/Handling Coondogs is my full time job and my only source of income so I absolutely have to have a good dog food that can keep a dog performing from dark until daylight for sometimes a week at a time. You will find out just how good the dog food you are using is when you attend a week long hunt that hunts both early and late rounds. I hunt 6-7 nights a week with 4-5 of those being from dark until its time to take the kids to school in the morning and the dogs that get hunted this hard are still on only 1 scoop (between 4&5 cups) of premium dog food, which is less than it takes of a cheaper brand just to maintain one!!! They are slicked up, muscled up, with enough energy to go as hard and deep as they can go at 6:30am, just like they did at 8:30pm! I'm not trying to toot my own horn or tell you that you are a irresponsible dog owner for feeding what you do, but think about how much time an money you have in your dog and how much he means to you and then ask yourself "is spending an extra 10$ really that big of a deal?"

Worm him out good and put him on a dog food that is half ass decent.

I

If I fee feed him him how much food would I put out cause if I let Him free feed he would look like he ways 300 pounds lol

Posted by Triple K Kennel on 03-21-2013 12:30 PM:

Feed.........

If you feeding 2 of the large drink cups from Captain D's, then it is more than 2 actual cups, but have the dog checked at Vet for Heartworms and other types of worms.........
If it has a clean bill of health, then it's the brand of feed, my dogs have never done good off Diamond, and I have used and tried EVERY brand mentioned, the Only one that I thought was a GREAT feed was Purina Pro Plan Perf., I think they call it Sport now, if you can't afford that, get some Purina One, it will work great if you are hunting only 2 nights a week..But Purina One will be enough if you are hunting 5 nights a week, give about 4 actual cups a day depending on how big your dog is.....good luck......Tim

I thought that was teh point to get him to gain weight. if he gets looking that big take him off the feeder. most dogs will learn when enough is enough. heck I have one that gets 6cupx 2x/day and will not eat all of it at one sitting, but he doesnt have extra fat on him, just a high metabolism.

I feed Purina One mixed with PP shredded chicken. tried the others, always seem to come back to purina. I tried diamond naturals, it worked for about a yr, then quit, so I changed. I know purina works for mine, both the active ones and the retired ones, so I stick w/ it. good luck

Posted by Larry Atherton on 03-21-2013 05:47 PM:

First of all, let me state right up front, I am sensitive to this type of question.

I have sold puppies in the past that their owners later sold just because in their mind the dogs wouldn't put on weight. The owners claimed there was something wrong with them despite a clean bill of health from vets. In each case, the dogs weren't overly skinny in my eyes, and they were typical of past dogs within this line. Many times these same dogs would fill out slightly more after fully maturing.

There are some dogs just like people who have a metabolism that keeps them thin. By a vet's standard, if your dog is healthy, just accepted it as it is.

Based on the fact that the dog runs all the time in its pen is enough to keep it thin. Feeding an athletic animal more than it needs isn't a good idea. By the way, these same dogs often live to 12-15 years of age.

Went to vet today he said he was right on the weight for his age my grandpa said he was to skinny and his hunting dog s were always beagle

Posted by ov_blues on 03-22-2013 06:16 PM:

Just look at the dog. If he has ribs showing or hip bones showing, he should have some more weight on him. Adjust the amount of feed your feeding until the dog has that lean fit look. All dogs are different. I feed several dogs and they all get slightly different amounts depending on their size, age, activity, metabolism, etc.

Also higher quality feed is more expensive but you can feed less so it could and probably will cost you less per feeding. If you want to keep feeding the same amount of feed your feeding now, and your dog is skinny, you will have to get a better feed or add something into it. Or you can go buy a better feed like some have suggested.

No matter what you feed you need to feed enough to get them where you want them and then regulate the amount they need to keep them there . You usually find yourself moving back and forth over what you want because of growth in young dogs , hunting hard (or not) and things like being over active in the kennel . I've got a couple now that just don't seem to handle the winter weather like they should & it's far from my first Michigan winter & not a severe one at that . Sometimes it just takes more feed but if their picky eaters thats a problem . Good eaters you can experiment with and feed twice a day if nessasary .
